Default oil comming out of carb

I am new to bikes. I noticed that there was a bit of oil splattered on my pipes and it looks like it came from the carb. Is that something I should worry about?

if the bike was just started after sitting for awhile, this is normal, and it shouldn't happen again if you run the bike regularly.

if it wasn't sitting then that's an indicator of a venting problem, and could have any one of several different causes.
some of them are more serious than others.
start with checking your oil level, and making sure you don't have too much oil in the bike.

if it's a minor amount of oil leaking, you could either ignore it ( and keep cleaning it ) or get some sort of aftermarket valve that attaches to the vent hole to prevent air from entering the venting system on the upstroke, this creates lower air pressure within the motor and helps keep the oil in.

S&S makes a reed valve that can help on some bikes, if it's not a softail.

if it's more serious, have a mechanic look at it, in really bad cases it could indicate a failing oil pump or worse.

What ya runnin'? Like Bryan, said, if it sat for a while and wet sumped, it'll push some out the breather(s). That's the only way it can get into the carb. As he stated, could be a number of reasons, a little more info would help narrow it down. I'm not real heavy into TC's, (way to many special tools, read that $$$, for my one man band), but some of the guys here are. Hopefully get you on the right track, tho. GUMBY

you will need someone with EVO 1340 engine experience, I'm almost certain thats what engine you have. One trick I've heard of is to remove some oil out of your oil tank it might be overfilled. If its wet sumping, oil draining back down into the crankcase, Ithink there is a check valve leaking back, a good independent shop can help you out on this one. The crankcase on Harley's is called a dry sump because your motor oil is stored in a tank below your seat and is pumped thru your engine when its running.

If it's a small amount on your pipes, I think it's coming from your air cleaner and is just normal venting of your breather lines.

Pretty normal for an EVO especially if you have a Screaming Eagle air filter. Just put a mini pad inside the air cleaner cover at the bottom and change it out every time you clean your filter.(Or every 28 days). You are not leaking enough oil to hurt anything and the pad will soak up what you are losing so you don't make a mess on the pipes.

On my 95 Evo, I removed the breather tubes from the airfilter and run a breather hose down under the bike. What little blowby you get will come out the tube under your motor. The make fancy chrome tube kits for this, but I use a rubber or plastic hose and a plastic vaccuum T fitting to hook both rocker boxes together, then run a single hose out the bottom. The oil you are getting in the breather is blow-by from the engine that is vented from the rocker boxes to the back of the airbreather. It's supposed to be sucked back in thru the carb and burned, but on an Evo, your getting some dripping out the filter. Not a problem, just messy.
