I have a 2005 HD 1200C, I bought the bike from a metric dealer ( repo ) and they do not have the owners manual. Do you check the oil after the engine has been run or after it has sit for a while? Thanks for your response, I have ordered an owners manual.
Check with engine warm at operating temp.
You can check cold, the oil should be between add and full, do not top it up if you check it cold, after you get it warmed up check it again, and it needs to be resting on the "jiffy stand" as Harley calls it!
John,
Just so happens I have a Harley shop manual for the 2005 Sportster that's been sitting in my garage collecting dust-Not the kind of thing I care to spend a lot of time trying to sell on ebay so if you can use it I'll be happy to send it to you.

That is a mighty fine and generous offer. Well done hitchhiker. The oil should be checked after the bike is at operating temps.
Thanks hiker, I already orderded one, I think it was $20.00, I am a new HD rider and I was just curious if you are supposed to check the oil warm or cool. Thanks again for your help everyone.
Hitchhiker, If you still have the 05 shop manual, I'd be glad to take it off your hands. You can e-mail me at champions6582@hotmail.com. I'd be glad to pay you something for it.
