On the road - Pledge wipes in a re-sealable pouch, then a light buff with a clean microfibre cloth. At home - soak with a car wash soap/water mix from a spray bottle, then hose off.
Easiest thing I have found is simply take a wet towel...and just lay it across the windshield for a while. It will soak and soften the bugs and they come right off.
This is an effective and easy solution. If I feel energetic I sometimes wax the clean windshield in the theory that that makes the softened bug debris slide off easier. Frankly, once you get over the first scratches you're gonna feel a lot better.
I consider the plastic part of the windshield to be pretty much a consumable part like tires....as others have noted, you really need to be looking over it, not through it. I try not to abuse the damn thing, but I'll take road time on the bike over worrying about bug scratches and rock chips anytime.
I use a spray bottle with a 50/50 mix of hydrogen peroxide and water, spray it on the bugs, wait 5 to 10 minutes and then wipe off. If the bugs have been there a few days it takes a couple of applications. The solution breaks down the bug guts. Then, if I'm at home I polish the windshield with Novus. If I'm on the road for a few days I keep a small spray bottle of the solution and a microfiber in my saddlebag.
Another one of those you use it its going to get dinged up.sure there are ways to not scratch it so bad. when they get bad go buy another one i spend more on lunch in a week than a new windshield costs.

Magestic Solutions "Bug-Off"...cut 50% with water. Spray on windshield, fairing or chrome and let it sit for about a minute...breaks down the protein in the bugs and they'll wipe off with your sponge on the first pass. Works wonders on the front end of my truck as well. A gallon of this stuff is about $20 and will last me for a couple of years.
I also use their car wash/with wax and have never waxed my 07 Ultra, or my truck, or my boat....
I have a Windvest and gust take an old towel, soak it in hot water and drape it over the windscreen for about five minutes, then wipe it with a clean cloth. I got some kind of scratch remover/cleaner with the windscreen made for aircraft, but have never needed to use it.
+1 on the wet towel set on the windshield for a few minutes, wring the towel out then wipe off the remains of the bugs, dry off with a clean towel. Follow with a cleaning using Novus plastic cleaner. Worked for me for a few years. If on the road and staying at a reputable hotel/motel just ask for a couple of "service towels".
