2000 sportster bike was running and just died out have taken entire harness apart and have found no groundouts or disconnections. Seems like coil is getting power but not putting out to the plugs. Should mention coil worked on other 883 and new wires on this one. Wondering if it could be the ignition sensor in the timing case cover? Any thoughts or have been theres to share. Going nuts here!
I feel your pain. I'm picking up my bike tomorrow after it spent 3 weeks at a dealer trying to diagnose a similar problem you're experiencing. My bike would just flat out die during riding. Luckily I got stranded pretty close to a Harley dealer that works on customs. Took them a awhile to actually get the bike to die on the dyno and once it did they finally discovered that the ignition module went bad. Once it got too hot it would shut the bike down. And once it cooled off it would re-start like nothing happened.
Electrical problems will drive you crazy and can get quite expensive if you just throw parts at it. It could be anything from a bad battery that doesn't charge, coils, voltage regulator, ignition switch, ignition module, loose wires, sensors, circuit breaker, and on and on. Could also be a fuel issue like pressure or vapor lock.
Hey that sounds like what this one is doing. Its my Hubbys bike and he has been taking parts off mine (Pig, a 2002 883 stock) to see what might be bad on his (Hog, a 2000 883 custom). We took a trip in june and that is when all the trouble started. He hard tailed Hog right before the trip and it didn't make it home on its own. The temps in Nor Cal for our trip were in the 100's and as soon as we would stop for fuel Hog would start and then die quickly. If Hog had time to cool it would fire right back over and run till you stopped it again. Now Hog will die even if you dont stop. So thanks for the info! I forwarded the message to Hubby and he will probably frankenstein Pig again to test Hog.
Thanks again and I'll post what happens
Start with your pick-up sensor in the timing chest. It has a filament like a light bulb.If it's bad, the filament will be broken. Each component of electrical system should be checked as follows: pick-up sensor, ign. module, coil
Not on my 99 sporty but on my 89 flhtp it would die completely for no apparrent reason, I would come to a stop and no power, wait a few minutes and start it up and go and it would cut out on the hiway same thing , I replaced all the circuit breakers and never had a problem again.
Also, don't forget that a bad Bank Angle Sensor will also shut the bike down. If you recycle the ignition switch the bike will start back up and run for a while and shut down again.
