I found that very few harley riders return the wave, and most metric riders do. Not really sure what this is all about, but i still throw it out there usually. As for helping folks, I look for the thumbs up and thumbs down, one time i even replaced a ladies radiator hose in her car, when it burst in a parking lot. I am always willing to help folks out, even on things like "ran out of gas" on a long stretch of road, and yes i do keep a length of narrow tubing on my bike, I guess it is just habit from before bikes had gas gauges.
I know some H-D riders who won't wave to anyone but another Harley, but they're not the majority. I'll wave to anyone riding if my left hand is free, and nod my head if it's not. I almost always get a reply.
I had an experience in the early 70's, not bike related, but one for which I follow karma. 3 AM one morning on I-95 in the middle of nowhere, car has a flat. Driving with wife and a GF of her's. Come to find she had no spare. A car came along and stopped. Bottom line of this experience that took a couple of hours, this motorist transported me to find an open station, waited while they found a replacement tire and mounted it, then all the way back to the car. By that time I had ten bucks left in my pocket which I gladly gave him.
Ever since then, if I ever see someone who looks like they're in trouble, I stop. I still don't think I've paid back that gentleman who was a saint!
I don't wave unless I know you, people might think I am a ***** or worse, but I just can't be bothered to wave to someone I don't know. Now on the other hand I'll stop every time if there is 2 bikes or less, never know when it might be a husband and wife, and the husband just needs a set of male hands to get things going. Stop-Yes, Wave-No.
cant tell you how many times i have ended my ride to go home get my truck and haul someone i didnt know bike back home.seems like the right thing to do.although i also have been passed by, by many a bikers when i have been on the side of the road.

40+ years ago I had a flat, on the I, in the dark on my way home. A guy in a p/u stopped, we loaded the bike up and he took me to my door. Would not take anything for his trouble, just told me to "pass it on". I stop and "pass it on" whenever.
I always stop for someone pulled over. If I'm pulled over, I don't expect anyone to stop. Life's too short to get all pissed off by other people not meeting your expectations.
Crazy
True that,Crazy. I don't depend on nobody but myself. I have been blessed by the Harley gods. I have been in a very dire spot once in my riding career. Which is too long to get into.
You know what? The real outlaws would kick your ***,DeadFred, for being such a whiner.
Now days with cell phones. More damn traffic on the road. Bikes that never break down. WTF?
I stop and I wave. If nobody stops for me or waves at me. That is just fine.
