Default Newbie question?

What is the purpose of wrapping your pipes with the thermal cloth? Does it affect performance? I have to keep my bike outside and it is covered but I do notice a small cluster of rust pitting on my black thunderheaders. It's right by the pegs from the condensation.Would wrapping the pipes help to prevent this any further? Thanks.

It will make the exhaust more thermally efficient.

Plus it looks cool.

It keeps things cooler, and can help performance. Downside is the wrap tends to hold moisture if its subjected to rain. Some say this promotes pipes to have a shorter lifespan. Personally I am not one who thinks it looks cool, but thats me. To each his own....[sm=smokin.gif]

Doesn't sound like it would be good for me if it holds moisture. Unless condensation isn't enough for it to trap moisture. The condensation isn' that frequent though

Like Grunt said, it holds the heat in the pipe (performance addition) and it looks cool (old school). Itcould however possibly shorten the pipes life span, do to the fact that moisture could be trapped in the wrap when the pipes are not hot.
These are questions you need to ask yourself:
Do you clean your bike often?
Do you apply protectant to the chrome?
What environment do you store the bike in?
If you clean and protect your pipes, they should not start to rust. Maybe they just need a little more attention.

Wouldn't bother with the exhaust Tape. It is for headers to retain heat and increase scavenging of the exhaust, old hot rodders trick. On an HD it is for looks and that is about it. Better to spend a few bucks for a can of VHT exhaust paint in black and when the rust shows up, hit it with a wire brush and repaint it with a quick spray for touch up...

I thought it was so it'll stop melting my rain gear pants or stop from burning my legs.
