i hate wearing helmets and refused to on all my dirt toys over the years, but im new to road bikes and im not comfortable enough with my abilities to ride without one on the street yet as much as i want to. honestly even after im feeling confident im not sure that ill decide to loose it. i kind of feel like i owe it to the family to do my best to stay alive to do my part. wifey's a nurse but that doesnt mean i want her feeding me and changing my diapers for the rest of her life.
edit. my grandfather also lost a leg on a harley long before i was born. he bought a new bike soon after but i dont think he kept it long due to issues with the old school fake leg. toughest guy i've ever met and i miss him more every day. it was amazing the things he could accomplish with 1 leg and 6 fingers.

DILLIGAF was around a looooong time before "30 years ago" I remember being a punk kid and seeing it just about the same time I ran across a "YCJCYAQFTJB" in the early 60's !!
I agree with OP, it should be our choice. In TX. its up to me if I wear a helmet or not. However, the wife makes the choice for me so I wear a helmet.
When your traveling and you cross state lines it helps to know if its a helmet state or not. Last week I'm gassing up in Hackberry, La., This guy pulls into the station and I noticed him and his gal had helmets on. He came up to me and asked if La. is a helmet state, Told him it sure is. This guy was lucky because he just passed the same 2 police officers I had just passed and he didn't get tickets. He did have 2 helmets in his tour pack. He had just came over from TX.
I don't wear one unless I'm in State that mandates it. It really doesn't bother me, as far as heat goes, but my neck hurts for the first day or so. I think it should a choice, not a law. Same goes for seat belts
