Chaps...or Kevlar
With that being said, I know it dosent answer your question, but being I went down on regular jeans and they didnt tear so I would feel confident with kevlar jeans. The ones I have, have kevlar down the seam, *** and knee. On a side not, they are much hotter than regular jeans. Weight wise, you have no clue, except mentally, that you are wearing jeans with kevlar.
Also, if you think about it, ***-less chaps, which they all are, still give you 0 protection when/if you fall on your *** where as the kevlar jeans give you that protection. Also some of the jeans come with padding on the knee like skateboards wear. I personally didnt find it comfortable when I tried that pair of jeans on.
My vote would be kevlar jeans. I wear mine like a regular pair of jeans on and off the bike. Most people don't even know you have fancy jeans.
Worse thing about the kevlar jeans are they are freaking EXPENSIVE. Find them on sale for about 80 at our local cycle shop, but off sale they are 130-150. Still alot cheaper than missing months at work while at the hospital having a skin graph done.
They are made in kevlar, the entire fabric is kevlar not just the stitching. Top for safety, the mesh is very cool in summer and with the liners they are great for rain and/or cold in winter. Underneath you can wear whatever you want , jeans or shorts. I have the matching jacket too.
Both made to measure, take some time to be produced and a bit pricey too, but it's a 4 season item with unmatched safety and wearability during hot summer days.

Kevlar jeans are better than nothing, but without armor they won't protect you from the impact of hitting the ground. The better alternative is a decent armored textile riding pant.
