Replace exhaust bracket under starter mounting bolts?
Hi everyone....
I have an '02 FLHTCI that I have kept in fantastic shape.
I do have a number of exhaust clamps and related nuts and bolts that, due to heat, have rusted, and I am planning a sweep of the bike to replace these and freshen things up.
There is some rust on an exhaust bracket used to secure the cross-over behind the rear cylinder. It has two mounting tabs that align with the two mounting holes for the starter. I will have to loosen the two mounting bolts for the starter in order to replace this bracket.
This could be a simple job, but I am concerned that with the starter unbolted, it could pop out of alignment, so that the starter shaft does not engage properly with the internals. No experience whatsoever messing with the starter.
Any thoughts, or first-hand experience with unbolting the starter would be appreciated. Is this going to be a simple task, or are there unexpected consequences waiting to bite me in the *** when I loosen the starter bolts up???
Your starter has bushings to guide the jackshaft. It won't fallout as you still have the pinion gear attached inside the primary. Make sure you disconnect your battery as touching the wrong part of your starter is shocking!
are you talking about the tab that is top of the bracket that holds the crossover pipe that goes to the left side of the bike (as you are sitting on it )? if so you can replace that tab only by removing just the top bolt ,,heat shields, and top exhaust clamp. it is either a 1/2" or 7/16' nut , the tab has the bolt spot welded to it ..$8 at the dealer for the tab.
those starter bolts can be a bitch,,tight,,need a long allen I think it was 3/8, but use the long ones that you can attach to a ratchet , I used a 1/4" set and cut a allen to be long to break them loose and retighten them ,, but make sure you use the correct size or you will strip the heads out ,, but if you do easy replace at the hardware store,, not that hard of a job ,pretty easy to change that #33 bracket
