General Topics/Tech TipsDiscussion on break in periods, rider comfort, seats and pad suggestions. Tech tips as they become available will be posted here.
I picked up a used set of 41mm quick release clamps for my wide glide, one has a lockout.
the problem is they don’t all fit snug on the fork tubes. They don’t feel like they want to come unclamped necessarily, and they are definitely the right size, but there is too much play for me to be comfortable.
They are only held together by spring pins, so i don’t see any way to tighten up the mechanism.
Could they just be worn out? The rubber “bumpers” are all intact and don’t look damaged or flattened out.
Pretty bummed. Hoping I don’t have to resort to some tacky fix like wrapping my tubes in electrical tape to tighted the seal. Thanks.
If they’re loose they’re the wrong size. If your forks are definitely 41mm then those are probably 49mm.
Try adding some rubber strips is all you can do.
The pad on the clamp arm has come off. Same thing happened to mine. I put some self-stick felt pads on mine.
Well, I see the image function of this site isn't working, so as soon as it is, I'll post a picture or 2 of what I did.
my son has a windshield for his bike. the pins were bent from use so we took them out, went to a hardware store and got some pins that matched. we installed them and the clamps were as good as new.
I put some 49 mm clamps on my Deuce. It has 41 mm forks. I took some 1.5 in schedule 40 PVC and cut about .5 inch out of the side and then cut four 1 inch long pieces. They snapped on the tubes just fine and the 49 mm clamps fit great. Don't get me wrong, I just bought some 41 mm clamps off Ebay and will mount them when they arrive. You could get some 1.5 Inch black water line and snap it on your tubes. That black water line is pretty thin and would be easy to cut. I own a miter saw and cutting my PVC was easy. You can cut the water line with a box cutter. Good luck.
