Default Detachable Windshield Trim

I have the detachable windshield for my 2010 Street Bob. Unfortunately HD does not make the hardware for it in black. So I'd like to take it all off the windshield, have it powdercoated and put it back on. Has anyone done this? Any tips for getting the parts off the windshield? It looks like there is a double-face, clear tape on the parts that attach to the shield itself. Also, will I need new tape/adhesive and can I get it from HD when I get the parts back?

Thanks for any help or thoughts,

Paul

Paul, the tape is readily available from HD parts and if anything like the Road King, it's sold in a kit with screws that you don't need. :-) I did this on my road king but had them painted black instead of the powder coating

As far as removing the pieces, take your time so as not to put stress marks in the plastic windshield.

You should take care to make sure when reinstalling the trim that the holes in the shield are lined up EXACTLY with the holes in the brackets. If they are off and the bolt rubs on the shield, it causes spider web cracks emanating out in the shield from the bolt holes from the vibrations.Once they start, you can't stop them. Also a dab of blue locktite on the bolt threads will keep them from loosening up.
If you do happen to mount one that is off a bit, use a dremmel tool and open up the hole in the shield to match the bracket hole so there is clear passage through without the bolt contacting the shield.

A stop crack remedy would be to use the dremmel tool if you develop a crack , basically what it does is to melt the shield back together at the point that the crack starts within the bolt hole.
