sert error message
and occasionally I take off for a 10-15 minute run,
only to find this message on the screen -
Lost PCM Sync (illustrated below)
I've looked around a bit searching on this forum,
in the SERT Data manual and Help files,
and I haven't found what this means.
Can one of you good folks enlighten me??
Frustrating to expect data, get this message,
don't know what it means,
and, more importantly what causes this issue.

Did you start recording, and THEN fire up the bike?????
Were the pins in the Diagnostic Link completely seated?????
Are all cables and connections free from defects?????
I read in the manual - let it idle for a few seconds,
then start recording.
I then watch a couple hundred frames log in,
close the laptop, zip up the backpack,
helmet on and go through the route
I use each time.
The other two questions, I do believe the answer
is yes to both.
This issue sometimes occurs a few minutes
into the data session, and then other times
at the very end.
This has happened three times out of the ten
data logging sessions.
Is PCM referencing the ECM talking to my laptop??
Thanks for the reply

This is probably what the message refers to.
As to why it's happening, the only thing that comes right to mind
is maybe the laptop is sleeping on you,
or a vibration is just right to cause an intermittent connection problem.
I'm surprised it's not referenced in the user manual,
and maybe it is somewhere I missed.
Manual is pretty thorough.
First sentence at that link -
Pulse-code modulation (PCM) is a digital representation of an analog signal
where the magnitude of the signal is sampled regularly at uniform intervals,
then quantized to a series of symbols in a digital (usually binary) code -
sounds about right.
The rest of that page, way over my head.
Laptop sleeping - may be.
had everything set for after two hours.
Went in now and set everything to never never never.
you said -
"vibration is just right to cause an intermittent connection"
Could be the answer.
Seems most logical, as the sync gets lost
at differing points each time.
I hope to correct this,
losing 3 out of ten sessions is not
something I look forward to.

1.) I left my wireless connection on. My Laptop is searching for a network while I am riding...
2.) I left my virus checker on - If I am not connected to the inet I don't need it.
3.) I left my pest (spy) checker on - again, if I am not connected to the inet I don't need it.
For some reason when the computer has too much to do it can't keep up with the recording. When I turn the above mentioned items off I haven't had that problem.

Trying to narrow this down,
Still only 75% success.
No wireless connection
Novirus checker
No spy checker
Under Options/Advanced, I don't know what Bus Access is -
Should I check this to ON???

PCM sometimes referes to "Programmable Co-processer Module" Which would be a generic term for your ECM (?). Either way its telling you it has lost its connection to the ECM. Low battery another possiblity..
I get that error once in a while too....figured it was because my laptop (Pentium I) isn't fast enough to keep up to the ECM data stream.

I still wonder what Bus Access is??
