The stage 1 download is a re-map program the dealers have (written by HD)for the ecm that adjusts the ecm for the higher flow air cleaner and higher flow exhaust. It is a generic program that is tailored to HD parts only. Better than no ecm upgrade but not as good as a race tuner. It doesn't do anything to the stock map. It overwrites and replaces the stock map.
So does the stage one flash lower the AFR from the stock setting of 14.7? Or does it add fuel to maintain 14.7 with the addition of the less restrictive air filter and exhaust? Does it make the engine run cooler?
So since this is tailored for HD accessories, it won't work so well with aftermarket brands of accessories?
From what I have heard, there is no download for pipes. Only the upgraded A/C.And that is to maintian the 14.7 afr. Doc
I do believe this is correct because HD doesn't want to formally issue any software for street use that is not EPC exhaust spec.compliant. If you haveaftermarket stage 1 parts I would get a race tuner and have the bike tuned because it will probably run hotter due to over lean conditions (and the 07's run hot to begin with).
If your trying to cool downthe motor on your 07 , I wouldn't waste your money on the Harley stage 1 download. It's sort of A Harley fix for changing out the stock air breather and mufflers with Screamin Eagle replacement parts. From what ive read and heard , it does richen up the fuel mix a tad but not enough because it still has to comply with the EPA regs being a fix from Harley. Rather than spending the money on a stage 1 download , I would suggest putting the money in a power comander or a TFI module such as one from Dobeck performance.I went with a TFI unit from Dobeck and am real happy with it so far. You dont need a puter and it's fairly easy to install. It lowered my oil temp 10 to 15 degrees at normal speeds ( 65 - 75 mph ) and the engine runs nice and cooler now ( 250 degreesdown to 225 degrees ).You can adjust it like you would changing out the jets in a carb but is done electronically by way of 4 pots you adjust with a small screw driver. You can adjust it to run as rich as you like or as lean as stock. Arlen Ness has a unit called the BIG SHOT and is made for Ness by Dobeck performance. The only difference between it and mine is the Ness unit has push buttons for adjustment while my unit bought directly from Dobeck has the 4 pots for adjustment. Gas mileage droped a little but I would rather have a cooler running engine vs mileage. Excessive heat is not good for the longevity of any motor , especially air cooled ones. Just a little food for thought.
What is this stage one race download I hear of? Is it a rumor, or does it really exist?
Existed in '06. Not sure if they have continued it considering they eliminated the SEII mufflers. The difference between the "street legal" and "race" download for me was night and day. Bike runs much cooler and much stronger with the race download.
