I just got about 600 miles on my new big bore....HTCC heads and HTCC 1550 pistons, 257 cams, high output download in the ECM. I noticed tonight that when I put it under a load, it starts to ping pretty good. I am running 91 octane fuel. I'm not talking about lugging it, I mean putting it under a load at about 70-75 mph by going ahead and twisting on the throttle. Will this pinging go away when I get the custom fuel map done on the PCIII?
Chris is right. Too much timing will cause it to ping. Low octane fuel in a high compression engine will cause detination.
"Usually".... if it happens near anytime (hot, warm, cold), it's too much timing advance. If it seems to occur only after the engine is heat soaked, it's more than likely detination ~ fuel igniting from hot carbon, a red hot plug tip, compression etc.
Pinging will also occur if you have too much compression for the cams. I'm not sure where the sweet spot is for 257's but I doubt it's cmpression related with that hot of a cam. That typically happens with much milder cams.
A good PC tuner should be able to help you get it iron out.
