2) There is a charge for maps? I go to https://harley-davidson.naviextras.com/shop/portal, choose Harley Davidson Premium NA, which I presume is correct because the CVO option clearly is not. And my bike being an Ultra, thus I thought premium. Once registered, I click on "free updates", but the only choice is for $149 to buy a map for NA.

If I'm going to be charged for map updates, I'm going to be pissed.

Yesss, you will be charged. I tried on my previous bike to get the dealership to spring this as a freebie, but no dice. They have to pay as well due to licensing. So I was told anyway.

Been using maps.me on my iPhone for a few years now, free downloadable maps and works fine with no data plan. I download the areas I need before I leave home or off wifi.

For data I have a cellular capable iPad with a US Verizon SIM card installed. If I really had to I can use its hotspot for data on my iPhone, but maps.me does what I need.

I'm going to get a phone holder for my SGS. I was using navigation on the way home from work last week and was just using it to show me where I was at on the ride home.

I was on a section of "new" road (created about 2 years ago) and the navigation did not show that section of new road. It kept trying to reroute me as the road did not exist in the software.

I was kind of bummed by that....

Every new Garmin GPS I've bought or seen sold at Costco or wherever has free lifetime map updates, and most have free traffic updates. They've changed since 2009.

The only maps I pay for are aviation maps from Jeppessen and Garmin.

I guess it just frosts me that I paid for a GPS which is conveniently installed on the bike.

I would like to use it as it was designed.

Per a previous poster, I've gone across roads that are 2 years old that the on-board GPS does not pick up, yet I have the most current map (MY2017).

But when there's a new update, they're going to charge me ~$200?

That is BS.

Some of the higher cost of my bike consist of the free map updates. So if you non CVO guys get it for free, I'M going to be pissy. LOL

Still not finding the free map updates for my Nuvi260W. Maybe its an age thing. Shows $49 for a 1 time update, or $90 for lifetime. The software updates are free, but not the maps. At least on mine this is what I'm seeing.

They just built a new mile long bridge near me. No way I'm going to pay $150 just see that on the screen. I'm just going to imagine that I'm Evil Kenevil and I'm jumping the river.

But...As far as every CarPlay system I have seen, it is not a replacement for an existing Nav system, but a way to use -some apps that Apple deems OK- on a Cars multimedia system. In CarPlay, you are more or less at the mercy of Apple Maps. Second, who is going to design the handlebar to system interface? Apple?, Google?, HD? Some third party app provider? Put yourself in HD's shoes, does it make sense to offboard the development, integration and support of a critical touring system to some nebulous third party? Apple won't even allow most all vendors to produce apps for CarPlay probably for the same reason that it is a bad idea for HD to even entertain the idea (being a 'deep pocket' fear of exposure lawsuits that are beyond your control).
Look, I get it. Some people can always come up with a case where the HD system didn't work for them. Many of those same people can mysteriously afford a 20+ thousand dollar bike not including costly after purchase parts. Yet, a $150 upgrade, maybe, every couple of years, maybe, that may or may not benefit them is a reason to get to cackling. Oddly, these same people can get a $9 mount off Amazon and have their blessed phone device, Wazes/Google Maps, and Bluetooth and be exactly where they want to be. Before anyone mentions handlebar integration, see above: HD, and any sane company, will never cede development of a critical safety system to a third party.
Hate to be a downer, but seriously? M8 owners all have the lastest maps (AFAIK). System updates are free. People are really getting wrapped around the axle one a $150 purchase that they may never need??
BTW: as far as AndroidPlay, NFI. Knock yourselves out, but I suspect it is the same dog with different fleas.

It would be nice, Delrider, if the "current" maps cover roads that are freakin 2 years old. It's just shabby to have to pay for updates when they won't cover roads that will have existed for some time.
