what I have noticed on our Harleys for ~20 years and nearly 300,000 miles now is that by not ever having measured, therefore seen engine or oil temps displayed anywhere, our models have not suffered any debilitating heat related problems. I have noticed by reading about Harley engines and excessive heat, that many folks that have been monitoring the issue have indeed discovered it to be a problem.
I have both a Temp Dipstick and Powervision.
At first I was worried about temps purely because of all the traffic and lane splitting here.
But now I know the typical operating temps that my bike runs out so I just glance every one in a while.
As long as ET stays below 350F it's fine. I alter the RPM range I run at when lane splitting if temps get too high.
but otherwise, typical temp is around 290~309F, Highways/Country roads on cruise 255~265F. Corner Carving/Twisty riding: 310~315F.
Now that I know those, and that's pretty safe and typical, I don't worry about it anymore.
