My 2018 road king (stage one at time of sale)
loses power after 50-100 miles.the top end gets way too hot and makes a lot of noise. Told today it was a sumping issue.
This sumping issue was supposed to be fixed. I guess not.
Sounds more like a fuel issue. Perhaps a tuning issue.
Been a few weeks... Cylinders were back-ordered / just came in few days back. Waiting on an oil-line for today / tomorrow then I'm back on the road... Dealer has been fantastic / keeping me appraised of the situation and running down parts.
Oil-pump was confirmed to be "latest model" and in good working order. Discussed fueling performance and whether or not there may have been an issue there, with excess fuel "washing" the cylinders and causing the meltdown... Confirmed the oil analysis did not indicate there was any fuel mixture issue. All evidence in my case points to piston / cylinder tolerances.
Hoping to be back on the bike by Wednesday (tomorrow) - all ready planning progressively more demanding rides in order to run it through its paces. Want to ensure we're good to go and I don't find myself in trouble far from home.
I believe I just joined the sumping club? 2017 CVO LTD with stage IV kit. 18000km on the bike, 5000km since the stage kit was dealer installed. (with latest pump at time of install in Jan 2018).
I was booking down the highway making miles 130-150 km/hr for about an hour (hot day 32C) running 5th & 6th gear to navigate traffic, rapidly had a major loss of power, no throttle response, when I slacked off on the throttle, it decelerated hard. Hot smell when i stopped. No oil or check engine lights came on? Just so happened I was within site of a dealer. (2km) so I limped it over. We'll see what the diagnoses is? Maybe I'm wrong? Was really hoping to make Sturgis?

Sorry to hear you’ve joined the sumping club. Most definitely sumping based on your description of the bike’s performance. My guess is that if you smelled burnt oil, you’ll be needing a new engine. I hope your warranty is intact and the stage IV kit is within the 1yr warranty coverage. You’ll most likely be down for 3 to 6 weeks while the inspection process, diagnosis and repair authorization gets underway, particularly given that you’re in the height of service season.

Back on the road TODAY! Oil line came in on Friday - I was away for a long-weekend in Montreal and hustled back this morning straight to the dealer to pick up my bike. All in all it took just under four weeks to get me back on the road.
Rides like it did "Day One" - put about 60 miles on it today and have plans to gradually put more and more stress on it over then next few weeks. I'd love to get a few thousand trouble-free miles on it in order to have some confidence we're in good stead...
Commute today was the first real test. Unfortunately the ride home provided a complete "de ja vu" experience for me. Might actually be worse this time, as the engine braking, even in 5th and 6th gear, was significantly noticeable.
Bike is back in for repairs, round two... Dropped it off this evening after hours. They will open it up in the morning.

Sorry to say but more weeks of down time ahead. Went through the same routine with 4 engines. Various oil pumps, one-off cylinders and pistons. Until they get serious and replace the entire motor with a current engine off the 2019 model line youll be just treading water as they keep testing less expensive oprions. Sad.

Update on the sumping. Dealer called a couple days ago, diagnoses was sumping, 10 oz of oil drained out when they pulled the crank sensor. Their telling me that the cause was loose oil jets, which surprised me because I had asked the tech when installing the Stage IV kit if he checked them, said he had? (that was 5000km ago) Anyway, parts have been ordered. They mentioned I'll need new Slugs, Jugs & Crank assembly for sure, I'm thinking their parts order may grow? Apparently the whole shop smelled of burnt oil when they pulled it apart. Good new is I'm warranty approved. Might even get it back in time for Sturgis. Glad I stuck to the HD street tuner.
Dealer had bike for a week... Took a few test rides (abt 20 miles around town) and did not experience sumping. Put it on the dyno Friday and ran if for 45 mins and did not experience sumping. In both of my previous situations, summing occurred following an hour or so of highway/interstate riding.
Yesterday was a gorgeous day here in North Jersey so I took the bike out from the dealer for a few hours to visit a buddy about 65 miles away (mostly highway @ 75 mph / 6th gear at around 3,000 RPMs). As I neared my destination I could sense the condition. Smell of oil burning, loss of power, change in exhaust tone and more and more heat pouring off the motor. Let the bike sit during my 30 min visit and checked the oil - down over a quart. Idled the bike for 5 mins to see if it would scavenge back - checked again - no change.
Called the dealer to let them know "we have a winner" and that I was on my way back to them. They were waiting with an open lift as I arrived. The whole dealership could smell the bike as we watched 2+ quarts of oil pour out of the crankcase. Spent quite a bit of time talking about what might happen next (repair options, escalations, new motor, etc.). It is as it is - I'm not bitching and certainly not beating them up about it. Just talking about expectations and experiences thus far. They've been great to work with and appear just as frustrated with the situation as anyone else.
One thing worth noting - this seems to be a recurring issue with the 117 motor, either stock 117s or 114s that have opted for a 117 kit (so I am told). Not necessarily the smaller motors. Hoping to know more during the week. I was very grateful for the opportunity to get a few hours on the road on a perfect day.
