I have to admit, these post are complete comedy. The same people that say the M8 sumping issue is a very very low fraction, are later in another post talking about how to modify this or that to get them a bit further away from the sumping cliff, all while agreeing if the M8 was right, it shouldn't sump under any condition. Now say that 10 times fast lol!!

Well I never said how many or what percentage I believe are sumping, but what I do believe is when a stock bike that is low mileage sumps then there is something very wrong with that. I haven't experienced it myself, but I have no reason to not believe someone when they report that they have experienced it. I believe in prevention, so if there is something that I can do to my motor that will make it less likely to be problematic I will.

The stupidity of this statement is astounding. Find one place where I, or the others involved with the S&S oil pump / HD seal discusion stated the sumping issue is a low fraction. Find it....

There's a reason I no longer own the 17 Road Glide.

Well, let me try to assist you:

1) Sumping exists. And if it happens to you, it's a disaster. Like lung cancer, it's not going to affect very many of us, but when it does, it's horrific.
2) the sumping prevalence is being grossly exaggerated by some folks.
3) We're all interested in avoiding sumping, just like we're all interested in avoiding lung cancer. Is there something we can do to minimize the risk? If so, we want to know.
4) Certain trolls who claim that sumping is everywhere and every bike is doing it and if it hasn't happened to you *yet*, well, just wait... are not helping. They don't help anything, anywhere. It's spreading Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt.
5) Everyone agrees sumping should NEVER happen. It's catastrophic. It should be an incidence level of 0.0000%.

So what have we learned?

Well, we've learned human bodies can get lung cancer, and that we shouldn't smoke and that will drastically reduce our chances of getting lung cancer.
We've also learned that a few M8 engines sump, and that if we avoid Stage IV (especially on a CVO) then we drastically reduce our chances of our bikes sumping.

Some human bodies will develop lung cancer without smoking. And some M8s will develop sumping without Stage IV on them. That's true. Stuff happens. But the vast, overwhelmingly vast, number of bikes that do not sump is somewhere around 99.98%, according to the numbers posted by the Harley dealer from Australia.

If it happens to you, and you have not voided your warranty, Harley will fix it to the best of their ability, including installing entirely new engines under warranty, even repeatedly if necessary.

There is no guaranteed fix for sumping that we know of. Harley's cam plate/seal does seem to have reduced the incidence of sumping, whereas we used to hear about 2 or 3 new sumpers every week, we're down to maybe 2 per month now. Of course, there are also something on the order of 18,000 new M8 bikes in owners hands each month too, so -- it would appear that the incidence of sumping is still quite minimal.

Don't be so sensitive. I wasn't talking about you. I was away from my PC for the past few hours and just got home and caught up. You gotta admit this is all comedy. It's too bad everyone can't send one clear message to HD Corp. Peace...

I agree with most of what you've posted, the only problem I have with it is a basic statement. It SHOULDN'T be happening at all, especially on a 3rd year product that can cost 20k to 44K, me having owned 2 of the 44K side.... There is NO ONE that can say 100% my M8 will be good for this 1500 mile trip (with regards to sumping) and not somewhat worry about it unless you have no issues leaving your bike in another state. Yes I know **** can happen on any trip, the statement is regarding sumping. Low percentage, high percentage doesn't matter.

The clear message is, it shouldn't be happening at all. HD needs to fix this, not keep changing oil pumps until it move you a tiny bit further away from the cliff. Why people feel the need to argue this, yes one again, baffles me.

I haven't seen a clear message that HD hasn't fixed it for the majority of people. If you have the latest seal installed you're probably golden for that trip. If you don't have it, get it. Can't hurt and will probably increase your chances of success.

Fixing the problem and getting you a bit further away from the cliff are two different things. You can't fix a root cause for the Majority of the people. That makes no sense, sorry and you won't convince me otherwise.

The bottom line is the problem is still there, the question is under what condition, for each individual bike, will it rear its ugly head. If I actually had that answer, I'd accept yours. But since I don't, I want the problem FIXED BY HD. Why do you have such a problem with this? It's a brand new god damn 44K motorcycle. Really!
