2018 M8----Sumping? Failures?
That was funny!
There's a reason I no longer own the 17 Road Glide.
1) Sumping exists. And if it happens to you, it's a disaster. Like lung cancer, it's not going to affect very many of us, but when it does, it's horrific.
2) the sumping prevalence is being grossly exaggerated by some folks.
3) We're all interested in avoiding sumping, just like we're all interested in avoiding lung cancer. Is there something we can do to minimize the risk? If so, we want to know.
4) Certain trolls who claim that sumping is everywhere and every bike is doing it and if it hasn't happened to you *yet*, well, just wait... are not helping. They don't help anything, anywhere. It's spreading Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt.
5) Everyone agrees sumping should NEVER happen. It's catastrophic. It should be an incidence level of 0.0000%.
So what have we learned?
Well, we've learned human bodies can get lung cancer, and that we shouldn't smoke and that will drastically reduce our chances of getting lung cancer.
We've also learned that a few M8 engines sump, and that if we avoid Stage IV (especially on a CVO) then we drastically reduce our chances of our bikes sumping.
Some human bodies will develop lung cancer without smoking. And some M8s will develop sumping without Stage IV on them. That's true. Stuff happens. But the vast, overwhelmingly vast, number of bikes that do not sump is somewhere around 99.98%, according to the numbers posted by the Harley dealer from Australia.
If it happens to you, and you have not voided your warranty, Harley will fix it to the best of their ability, including installing entirely new engines under warranty, even repeatedly if necessary.
There is no guaranteed fix for sumping that we know of. Harley's cam plate/seal does seem to have reduced the incidence of sumping, whereas we used to hear about 2 or 3 new sumpers every week, we're down to maybe 2 per month now. Of course, there are also something on the order of 18,000 new M8 bikes in owners hands each month too, so -- it would appear that the incidence of sumping is still quite minimal.

The clear message is, it shouldn't be happening at all. HD needs to fix this, not keep changing oil pumps until it move you a tiny bit further away from the cliff. Why people feel the need to argue this, yes one again, baffles me.

The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
The bottom line is the problem is still there, the question is under what condition, for each individual bike, will it rear its ugly head. If I actually had that answer, I'd accept yours. But since I don't, I want the problem FIXED BY HD. Why do you have such a problem with this? It's a brand new god damn 44K motorcycle. Really!
