Default Read all the posts............still confused!

Hello all -

I brought home my first harley last weekend (1991 FXRS Lowrider - 20,800 miles) and I'm still having a tough time wiping the grin off of my face. I've started to check on maintenance issues (I believe in home maintenance) and am having a tough time choosing what oil to use. I've read through the forum..............and it seems like everyone is using different products. I don't care about price or availability. I want the best for my baby. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. Great site............and great help.

Thanks -

Mark

My first recomendation is dont be cheap on the fluids... I put in Mobil 1 V-Twin, others use Amsoil, a great product, your choice. Tranny I will be using Red Line Shockproof Heavy Gear oil and Primary again I will be using Red Line MTL. I didn't spend $18k on the bike another $6K in upgrades to be cheap on the fluids...

Check the Evo section and ask another Evo owner what he thinks.

There's thousands of Evo's with over 100K on them using only dino oil- mine included. If you want to throw away the bucks, syn oil is perfectly good oil, but not needed. I use Kendall GT 20w50 in my oil tank, ATF in my primary( it's red so I can tell what's leaking), and gear lube in my tranny. The tranny is an area where I do use syn lube because I figure I can leave it in there almost indefinitely. But you have to change the oil regularly torid it of combustion byproducts and I can't see throwing away expensive syn oil.

Since your bike is a 1991 and sealing technology was different then than it is now...I would NOT use synthetic oil in that bike because it might find all the seal voids and start leaking. I would use the HD 36020w50 engine oil in the engine, HD primary chaincase lube in the primary, and Valvoline or Lucas 75w90 dino GL5 gear oil in the trans (autozone carry's both)

Thanks for the replies guys. I appreciate all the help. I was set on using Amsoil or Mobil 1 V-twin..................................and now I'm scared to start using synthetic. Any opinions on synthetics in a 91 Evo? KBFXDLI - what you're saying makes sense.......................i don't have any leaks now................and don't really want any.

Thanks -

Syn gives more temperature protection but an Evo runs cooler than a Twinkie so, as long as you change often, probably don't need it as much as a Twin Cam.

In theory, syn is better and shouldn't cause leaks but, in reality, whether because of the detergent content, ability to "squeeze" through smaller spaces, LOL, or effect on seals and gaskets not used to it, many report leaks after changing to syn on older bikes.

Like mp said, there are a lot of bikes out there over 100k with dino oil in them. I always just run the Harley Davidson oil in my bike, I figure their engineers are smarter than me and for whatever reason that's what they use. I am running the synthetic in both of my bikes, the Springer came factory with it and the Sportster between the motor work I did and the Summer heat sometimes it gets a little hot. On a stock bike though I'd just run the HD dino oil, it seems to work pretty good.
