No rock slides as of today but hay with the rain and spring time anything can happen..They are pretty good about keeping you up to speed however...DOT that is..
thanks guys, had the tripped mapped out from last year with all the closures, but an injury prevented us from going. So where going at this year and I needed to take the detours out.
Like Cpt Itch said no closures at the moment. I live 30 minutes from the BRP so I try and stay up on any closures as we ride it often. I will say be aware of potholes as we had a lot of snow along the BRP this winter even had a couple of inches up there yesterday around the Boone area and higher elevations. Just thought I would throw that out there.
There is going to be construction from Linville Falls/221 intersection north 11.1 miles to the Grandfather Mountain/221 intersection. They are placing the sediment barriers now, weather permitting. There will be delays in this area, but apparently no closures. I rode the Jeep through there this past Saturday, it appears that the much needed asphalt problems will be dealt with. It is in very bad shape, this winter has not helped matters any. The Linville area had 4-5 inches of snow yesterday after 4.5 inches of rain, so the snow gates may be back up temporarily. Always check the nps closure link to be sure!
I will post when the actual construction begins.
Just to remind everyone, the difference in the weather up here and where you are now can be extreme. Check out this picture from today, 3-7-11, 7 am at 3600 ft. elevation, 21 degrees, 25 mph wind. That IS ice under the truck. The Parkway is about 3800-4000 feet through here, so it might be a little cooler. Bring warm clothes, even in July.
Don't worry about the detours or closings! They can be some of the best parts of the ride. Sometimes you get to ride through some of the "off the beaten path" highways and meet some of the nicer people in the world.
