Thanks hscic. Your VIN is where I’d expect it to be for a 71 in that range. But for eight 1971 Shovels earlier than yours, and one very late 1970 Shovel, I have photos of VINs stamped further forward as per the example below.

The frame still had a sticker on the R-H front downtube and the build date was July 1970.

I have photos of eight 1971 Shovel frame VINs stamped further forward than normal. All eight are earlier than yours which means they are lower than your VIN.

Just curious, what were the things wrong with it?.
Newer style floor boards, after market points cover, wrong speedometer (only 90% sure about that one), missing right side passenger peg, tires (that bike I would find the right tires, hard or not), and some weird gizmo in front of the transmission cover/rear pipe on the right side. Maybe John knows what it is. But that was really it, like I said an afternoon worth of work if you spent the time to find the parts first. The owner believed the bike only had 600 miles on it, I think his later speedometer only had 600 miles on it!! The bike was super clean, but had been ridden a few miles more then 600 since 1971. But it really was a nice bike.

Just be picking for educational purposes.

PS I am going to reluctantly disagree with John about the AMF sticker. My research tells me that in 1971 the stickers were distributed to the dealerships, the dealership made the decision to apply it to the tank. 1972 they came from the factory with the sticker. This is my story.
