In the past couple of weeks, I noticed that the bike ( a '77 FXE) wouldn't start easily when hot. Specifically, I had to press the starter button several times before it would contact and turn over ( prior to turning over, there is nothing at all--just a dead button, no clicking, etc). This only happens very erratically and only when hot. Cold starts are perfect. Any thoughts on what might be causing this and what diagnostic tests might I use to figure out the cause, I did open up the switch housing on the handlebars and sprayed electrical cleaner all around the starter button but it still does it. It has always eventually started after hitting the button several times. Once it contacts, it starts and runs perfectly.
btw--i recently had the primary drive apart to fix a tranny leak so the starter, solenoid and relay were all removed and reinstalled. It did do this once before this job was done but now it happens more frequently.
its very possible the button is bad - the relay could be bad - and the solenoid could be bad - one 2 or all 3 -
when its doing it you need access to the relay - you need to see if the button is putting 12 volts into the relay - if that is a yes - then if 12 volts is going to the solenoid -it is the solenoid it its getting 12 volts
