What would it take to convert a 1982 FLT front-end to a FLH appearance? I've located a nice FLT, but I can't bear to look at the fairing. Would this be doable at a reasonable cost?

Probably not but it depends, what's your definition of reasonable? The shark is cool, rock it

I don't like the look of them at all...I think a windshield of any kind looks awful on these bikes. If I could accomplish the swap for under $2000 I would consider it...otherwise I will keep looking for an FLH.

I've seen a couple where they removed the fairing. The one behind the red FLH in this picture. Looks like a FLH headlight. You'll still have the FLT gas tank and instruments, though.

Continue looking for what you want instead of creating a bastard that was cheaper to buy but more costly in the end and - and actually not what you wanted

FLTs are cheaper YES - but - they ride better smoother and more agile - you sit better on the saddle and handlebar location is more using friendly - its cleaner in turns at faster then you should have been doing - and its the grandfather to all the douche bag copy’s they have been selling for years now with a more girl like fairing look < soooo what exactly is it you dont like about it except what your visual tells you

It is the visual aspect. I have no qualms about mixing parts as long as it is pleasing to my eye. The instruments and the tank would absolutely have to go.

Shark noses look fantastic, from the rider's seat cruising down the interstate doing 75 MPH!!!!

Think about it, they work really well for their intended purpose.

Shovelheads in nice condition are becoming harder to find, unlike the Road Kings which can be found everywhere. Just my opinion, but after the mid 80's all bikes became smoother and modernistic. All the Japanese bikes copied the HD style and became nearly clones. I prefer a fatter bare bones look if you get my meaning. Were I to opt for a newer model it would hands down be a Road King with minimal bling.

Sounds like you need an FLH in your life, not an FLT.

Going to be a major PITA to get a FLT stripped down, and you are basically stuck with the saddle bags. But a four speed you can do just about anything to and it can still look good. Just sayin'.

If you are not happy with the fairing, tank and instruments, you are better off starting with an FLH, or an FX and add the front end you like.
