Does anyone know of a set of forward controls for a stock 76 FXE. We are looking for forward controls that would cause a better seating posture. Some of the forward controls are way too forward. The OE foot controls on our 76 FXE are cramped. There are so many forward controls out there its hard to pick a set. Any help will be appreciated. We are looking for something simple that gets the legs in a more comfortable place without the radical stretched feeling.
I have a set of forward controls with foot boards. They are really great. The foot board gives you extra room to move around. J&P has tons of different controls, extenders, pegs and boards for older bikes.
I like the Custom Chrome ones, they've been on my bike for several years. They were a lot cheaper than the billet ones that were all the rage when I put them on.
Are the mid mounts w/highway pegs not working for you, or do you really want the look of forwards? The highway pegs will stretch you out a little more.
I'll try loading a pic of my shovel with the custom chrome forwards:
I am putting some Softail controls on my 78 right now.
The pegs are a few inches back from the stock ones, but I can use the brake and shift levers easier, so that is a trade off.
Not all of the Mid-control bikes (FX)have the proper tab on the frame for forward controls.
Look on the right frame down tube for a two hole tab. Both holes are threaded 3/8" coarse. That's where your right side controls will mount. If you don't have a tab there, take a look at J&P cycles P/N 5300002. That's what you'll need.It must be welded on.
If you've got the tabs for forward mounts, personally I'd go shopping on e-bay and either find a complete set or build you a set from parts. I did that for my last sportster and ended up total out of pocket, about $80 and had a nice looking, one of a kind set of forward controls...
Their is a guy " FAB KEVIN" and his shop sells a bolton kit for like $30 that will let you use any 99up forward controlls on your 4 speed frame. Thats what I'm doing after the first. and some of the stock stuff looks good on our frames
fabkevin.com and yes that kit should work. a little price-e. And I dont think I have ever seen a bike without the tab you need, its right at the end of your front motor mount. Every bike I've had with mids had the highway bars there? Kevin has some good stuff, if you get something from him you wont be disapointed...

Reason: more to the answer
I called Kevin and the price is 125.00 plus the cost of used forwards. Probably end up costing me the same as new forwards by the time it's all said and done.
According to Kevin he has seen a few FXE with and without the right side frame bracket. He said it's kind of random with no rhyme or reason to it.
This bike is a total throw together. It has the wrong pipes, and they run right where the forwards need to go. So now I need pipes!
