Hey Guys, been looking to sell my 82FXR but all of a sudden I've been having a hard time starting it..I got a new battery, had the starter checked, and already replaced a solenoid in it...I cant really see any loose or grounded out wires or anything like that but maybe I should check again? Also when i try and start it all the lights dim gauges, headlight w.e it seems like its drawing away too much power from somewhere i dont really know tho...You guys have any other thoughts? If so please let me know..Thanks
Battery/starter cable connections clean and tight and the cables in good shape? You should check the connection at each end of every cable, positive and the negative ground cable to the frame. Have you tried bypassing some of the wiring in the start circuit to see if that'll get it to crank? Do you have a good ground cable (I use a #6 welding cable) from the starter motor gear reduction housing to your frame ground lug?

sqdealgeorge,
I forgot that the engine in his bike is rubber mounted. Glad you brought up that ground strap.
The little #6 welding cable I suggested ain't big enough for all the amps the starter draws if that ground strap has failed.
Is there only one ground strap? I would expect at least two from the engine/primary/trans assembly to the frame.

Thanks guys, I will have to go and look when I get off work and see what I got going on. As for the oil being too thick I dont think so because as it gets colder I start to use more of a less thick oil...Ill def check those wires again and see what I got...If you guys have anymore suggestions or thoughts I am still looking to see what other thoughts you may have...Thanks Again
When it don't start I go right to fuel, on account of all this crap no-lead we get now. After a long winter your baby wants a new drink! That old stuff sitting in her glass is just not right! Stale, got cold and seperated, and then what did you put in it before you put her to bed? Any fuel conditioners? Winterization?
That would be my fist place- fuel, then plugs, check to see if she gets a spark at all. before I go ripping into ground wires and everything else sometimes you got to look at the simplest things bro!
I'm real **** when it comes to charging up my battery also. I pull the battery and put it on my bench all winter long. I use the Holiday rule, every time there is a holiday I hook up the battery to the trickel charger, bring it up and then disconnect right away. So I usually put her to bed on or around Holloween and at Christmas, then Valentines Day, St. Pat's day (if I don't have up by then) and so forth (got five kids so their birthday's are mixed in there somewhere)
By Mother's Day I got my best girl on the back and in the wind! I don't need to tell you what happens on Father's Day... ha ha ha.
So fuel-spark-battery then I go for the (what they said up there ^) but here's to hoping you don't have to go through all that, remember she is a Shovel! We got the best here brother.
