Default Battery problem

I have a problem with my battery/ charging system.

After buying my bike a few weeks ago, I bought a new Yuasa battery (sealed/ maintenance free), everything was fine untill I happened to notice earlier today that there was a bunch of battery acid residue on the aft end of the battery tray and cover.

I removed the battery, inspected for cracks etc, cleaned everything, and reinstalled the battery without the chrome cover.

I drove home from work (about 50 miles) rechecked everything, and again found a bunch of residue. It seemed to be coming out of the upper aft vent hole. I checked the regulator and got no more than 14,7V when I revved the engine. Battery had 12,9V after sitting for about 4 hours.

Any ideas what else could make a new battery spew acid????

Thanks
Mat

Perhaps the battery was overfilled or the angle of the battery box is incorrect.

K...Not sure if Yuasa sells a sealed battery or not but...that being said...if it is sealed (as in AGM type) it should not leak anywhere at all. Lead-acid can if temp gets to high or it is overfilled, but not a SEALED battery. If it is it is cracked somewhere.

Seems to me you have a lead-acid

I agree here, if it has a vent it is lead acid and needs an overflow tube to dump the acid overflow to the ground. Acid boils and expands when being charged. If you have a sealed/maintenance free battery, it is just that, sealed and maintenance free.

ok, I guess I made a mistake with the terminology...
It was delivered in box with an acid pack. After filling the battery you seal the cells with the special cover that comes with the battery, and that is how its supposed to stay untill the bitter end (according to the instructions..) There is a vent hole in the top edge of the batt, but there is no hose fitting.
I figured out that the regulator/ rectifier is supposed to stop charging the battery after the battery is fully charged. I have a constant 14,7V flowing to the batt at higher rpms (highway speeds), even though the batt measured 12,9 after standing for about 4hrs. And I've noticed that when I stick to the back roads the batt doesn't boil over, only after about 20min on the autobahn...
so I'm in the process of getting a new regulator. I had one today, but found out pretty quick that I have a 2 wire setup instead of the original 3 wire setup.

Know you just bought a battery, but dump it and get a sealed AGM one instead. Less headaches and no acid spill. Most have better CCA than lead-acid as well.

I also noticed that the potting compound on the underside of the regulator, where the wire bundle enters, has a gaping crack. So I'm sure moisture was able to get in there.
I'll see how long this battery holds up before I go for an AGM since it's pretty much just for the e-starter (and of course initial spark when your kickin...) I rode the bike the first 2 weeks on a half dead battery with no problems, so I'm hoping it doesn't leave me too stranded.....
