Default SE-203 Cam question

My buddy owns a 2002 Heritage (carb) with just under 20,000 miles.

Only mods are air cleaner, exhaust and re-jetted carb.

I was given a set of SE 203 cams a few years ago and figured I'd install them in his bike when I had the time.

He is on a tight budget so I won't be cutting the push rods or replacing the inner bearings because I do not have the tools.

So my question is will the benefit be worth my time and effort?

Thanks

Yes. A lot of people bash the 203 cam. I had them and I liked them a lot. They put the torque where I wanted it. However I took them out when I got headwork done and used the cams to complement my headwork.

Nothing wrong with the 203 if they have the power band where he does most of his riding.

I had 203s in a 95" but the power band was a little higher than what I wanted. I had a lot of 4-5 shifting around 40-45 and most of the power was above my usual 60-65mph cruising speed. I changed to the Andrews 21N. Solved both of my problems and still plenty of juice at 70+.

You will need the specialty tool to remove/replace the cams in the cam plate and the tool or a method to release the cam tensioners. I think there is also a tool to remove/replace the bearings on the cams after they are out of the plate. Use new outer bearings.

I would replace the cam tensioners with new stock ones while you're in there.

I have a 2003 Heritage with the HD big bore kit (95ci) that came with the SE203 cams. Mine is fuel injected.....

I really liked the way it ran with the HD download tune that came with the kit. It ran much better than with the stock cam!

I've recently bought a Power Vision tuner for my '12 and got an additional license for my '03.

DynoJet tweaked the HD download tune for the '03 bike (can't use autotune, no o2 sensors) and the bike runs even better...!

An added benefit, the SE203 cams have a semi-lumpy idle, reminiscent of the shovel head idle....

I also installed these cams in an '03 with a BB kit. hattitude is right on about the idle of these cams...they sound old school!

Taking the cam plate to the dealer so that they can swap cams and replace tensioners and bearings. I'm hoping the bike has a better idle and acceleration which I think he'll get. Bikes a dog right now pulling onto the highway. I was shocked how flat it felt when I rode it.

Tell the dealer you want to see the replaced parts before the work begins...always!

Sorry, I don't follow? I'm pulling the cam plate from his bike. Then bringing the cam plate assembled along with the cams. They will take car of the rest. Is there something else I should be aware of?
