Default Baffles or new pipes for dad

Hi guys, i am over here for my dads sake. He has an 05 Deluxe with stock pipes on it. Now that I have a bike that is louder than his he wants to do something to open it up a little.

Do the baffles in the stock pipes come out?........and if they do, who makes replacements that are louder for it. I really doubt he would want to go without baffles because of the neighbors.

Or should he look into replacement piper from V&H or Rinehart......or others?

Thanks,

B

Normally, the baffles in stock pipes are permanent. V&H are great pipes...nice and loud. You can run them without baffles, with the stock baffles or buy the quiet baffles.

I have a 05 Deluxe also. The stock baffles are easily removable on the 05. Just get a hole saw, I believe it is a 1 7/8" diameter. If you look into the end of the of the exhaust pipe, you will find a flat shoulder area just inside the outer wall of the pipe. Your hole saw should fit inside the outer wall, and ride on this shoulder area. Cut through the shoulder area, going straight into the end of the pipe. As you cut through the thin sheetmetal shoulder area, be careful as you break through. The stock mufflers appear to be glasspacks with a baffle in them, and you don't want to damage the glasspack material. Reach in and grasp the baffle with a pair of needlenose pliers, wiggle it a little bit and it will pull right out. Do the other pipe in the same way. Afterwards, take a half round file, and knock off the burrs from the inside edge where you cut.

Removing the baffles gives a nice mellow rumble, that is louder than stock, but still not offensive. I ran this way for about a year before putting on a pair of V&H BSS, which are MUCH louder than running without the baffles in the stock pipes. Removing the baffles was a very easy mod, that took about a half hour to do. It took me longer to run to Home Depot to get the hole saw.

Good luck.

Can the same mod be accomplished on a '07 Heritage?

mikeshog, doubt it. From what I understand, in 06, Harley added a catalytic converter to one of the pipes, and it is not removable this way. Don't know how to change that, sorry.

A relatively inexpensive option is Rush slip ons. Maintains the same shotgun look but with a much better sound and performance. Do a google search for rush mufflers. The site has sound clips for various baffle sizes. I have them on my 07 Deluxe and the sound is great without the sharp edge of a V&H. $270 for both mufflers. Add $500 and you can get Rheinhardt.

Thanks guys for the advise. I think I will try and talk him into the drill thing first and say "you are probably gonna get new pipes anyway so don't worry about screwing these up". I don't know if he will go for it but I can try.
