Carburated 88 issue

Today I went for about an hour ride. Everything was normal, it ran good. I came home ate dinner, and went back out to start it. When I did it made a pretty loud pop and then while it was running it was making a sound kinda like when a spark plug is out of an engine, like a compression leak, but a big one. It won't idle. And the air sound seems to be coming from between the cylinders, behind the air cleaner.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Any mods to the engine? Cam tensioners replaced?

I bought it used 2 years ago with 11k miles, I'm pretty sure it was all stock. I checked the outer shoe last fall and it was worn but didn't look too bad, so I planned on riding it this summer and putting the heat drive in this winter.

I was hoping intake gasket, but the more I think about it, intake should be a continuous sound not a chuffing?
I'm starting to think head gasket, which is really making me angry.

I have seen a twin cam backfire and blow the cv carb off the round gasket. Take off the air cleaner and back plate and make sure it's pushed into the manifold gasket correctly.
