Barry

Welcome to the forum from central Texas. Unfortunately, you likely bought yourself a paperweight. The "VIN ERR" message means that it has already been married to another bike. The data transfer cable will not override that. Once a speedometer has been married to a bike, it is married to THAT bike.

The only way it would be usable to you would be to have a dealer or the factory reset the speedometer. I know that the factory DOES NOT do that. It is unlikely a dealer does but you can ask.

Unless something has changed in the last 15ish years, the dealers cannot change the mileage in an odometer. Back in the day, they had to send them to the factory for that....

If the dealers could change mileage in an odometer, no one could ever trust the odometer of a used bike in a dealer's showroom ever again....

I had a feeling that might be the case, thank you for confirming that for me. I guess if I want a fully functional unit I will have to pay the Piper. Funny thing is the HD web site shows one in stock at my local store. last time I looked they were not available.
thanks again.

It is possible make any dashboard ZERO or any mileage. Also possible pair ECM with Dash to prevent VIN error.

If you would like to pair your dashboard with the ECM remotely, I can help. You need an adapter OpenPort 2.0 (cheap China copy is for $30) and the diagnostic cable OBD to 6 pin Harley port. For a new one- OBD to Euro 5 cable. Also can buy AliExpress. Laptop, fast internet connection and 15 minutes free time. But you must to know, if the mileage in dashboard MORE than in the ECU, the mileage in the ECU will be the same as dashboard after pairing. In this case, I also can resolve.

So this process would set the ECM to the mileage on the replacement odometer? If I had this issue again I’d want the replacement odometer to be changed to match the real mileage in the ECM.
