I'm working on my friends bike, 1992 FXST with a CV carb, stock exhaust with a small non restrictive air cleaner. I have the mixture screw at 3.5. I can't get this bike to start without 4 or 5 prime squirts. Once the bike is running is idles great and runs amazing. Is this normal for this bike/carb?
On that carb, with stock engine, you just need to pull out the enrichener (choke) **** and press the start button, the engine should start right up. No need to twist the throttle, just leave it in the idle position.
Yep, the choke it out but it won't fire without a few squirts. I was thinking about adding more fuel with the mixture screw. Does counter clockwise add more fuel or more air to the mixture?

counter clockwise will be opening the screw which will add more fuel to the mix.
being you're at 3.5 turns out already, any chance the pilot/slow jet is partially clogged?
if not, you may need to go up one size on slow jet.
at 3.5 turns out, going more increases the potential for the adjuster screw backing out & possibly falling out.
