Hey all,
so Ill get this question going and add more as I go. So my bike is a 95 Softail FXCSTC and I bought it 8 yrs ago. I started having some issues that can only be decribed as a "revving" type of sound that reminds me of a lawnmower governor thats out of whack. I race thru the gears to kinda add more gas, but its not really a gas type of issue.
not knowing much and always having a slow turning start up....I pull the battery and its 12yrs old! Could I have damaged another component since the battery was so old? l know on a car if the battery is shot and you start running off the alternator, the car runs like crap.
I just replaced the battery, finally, and Im still having that revving condition.
Check for air leaks from back of carburetor to heads.
Does the carburator flood if you turn it off and don't kill petcock? If it has the vacuum petcock and it's really an important safety feature, check it to be sure it holds a vacuum. The earliest design only had one diaphragm. If it leaks, it will pull fuel straight to intake.
Im not sure if the carb floods or not. I never shut the petcock off and dont have a problem getting it started. it was just kinda turning slow before the new battery.
I had been doing carb work on and off! I thought it would pop or bogg down, like it was too rich or lean if I had a leak.
I googled the regulator and looked at my bike. Mine actually has a ground wire hanging there not attached to the frame. ??? I believe its always been that way tho
I kinda doubt this electrical. If the battery is 12 years old might as well replace. I too wonder if vacuum or intake leak, but I don't know. Never had this with a carbed bike.
I'm thinking it's fuel related, possibly a flow issue.
It's a 95 so I'm not sure when they started putting on the vacuum operated petcock
But you said you don't shut off the gas so I'm thinking you don't have that.
Filter screen could be clogged, petcock could be clogged, float could be sticking.
Checking these will cost you nothing but time.
Ill take the carb off and check things out. I had changed the jets a few times to fine tune things. seemed to run well for two summers, before I started having this issue.
starting getting into things and learning along the way is great. I found out my petcock does have the vacuum connection and its working. also, I have a custom tank setup and the petcock is actually not going out to the right causing a kink in the fuel line. Im replacing it with one going the right direction. Its been that way since I purchased the bike, but didnt even realize. I dont think its the problem, but I want things right and I can start chipping away at the real issue. thanks for all the input guys!!
