To determine if your comfortable, check there website out and look at the Smartlink IV Setup guide:

The only parts that are "iffy" feeling are locating the plugs and running the new wires; and it is not hard. As for mapping, I had to choose between two maps and it turned out the bike would not start or idle well onthe first map, the second map has been perfect. I believe after one install I could do the second one in about 45 minutes.
Not true about the 6th gear light, they work just fine (at least on all the bikes I have seen with it). You find a map close to what you have and the auto-tuner will adjust it (the default setting) 5% each session or 20% over for sessions of riding. You can adjust those numbers and have it learn more each session and more over the total riding. Of course, the closer you map is to correct, the fast it learns and adjusts.
I have the Thundermax on my '08 Custom. I had the dealer install it, though, so I can't help you with that part. My 6th gear light still works. However, the Low Fuel light and the "Miles to Empy" feature don't work. Thundermax is working on a fix, so hopefully those features will be working sometime in the near future. I've been using the Thundermax for about a week now, and I love it. The bike keeps getting better and better every time I ride it.

Hi
I too am going to fit the TMax to my 2007 standard. I needed answers to a few questions, like the active air exhaust system, maps etc. so e-mailed Randy at TMax.
He responded straight away and suggested which map I d/load for my set up! Definately re- inforced my choice to fit the TMax, excellent people to deal with.
Will post when I get my unit and fit it (I live in oz so have ordered from the good ole usa! )

The Tmax Ecm is cake to install on any bike if you can see pictures. They give you a full install and tuning manual on cd rom. They give you all the updates you need all you have to have is internet access. Don't try to do it if you are not computer friendly. If you are using Auto tune and you are computer friendly, Go for it.If you are using Open loop processing then go to a tuning shop with a dyno and have the map done right the first time. I suggest that you do closed loop processing no matter what year efi bike you have. The cost of welding in the two o2 bungs and the price of the unit with auto tune will pay for itself later.Save yourself the questions and time spent wondering, the first time. YES it makes a HUGE difference with the tmax ECM over stock. I love it. I am learning how to advance tune and it's fantastic what ya can do to these things.
