I would go ahead and change them out while you have it most of the way there anyway just changing out the bars. I ended up going with 16" apes but I was going to do it even when I was originally going with 12 1/2". They are not that expensive and gives you a more solid feel. Just my opinion.

I have the bushings but can any one tell what is involved with changing them, like how hard they come out or go in or any special precautions I need to know about it.

I was gonna do it when I did my bars but I only had the weekend to get it done at the time and that included the exhaust and when looking at them I wasn't sure what was involved so I skipped it at the time.

Seems like a good reason to go out in the garage and play with the bike!
It's really easy to remove them. Just remove the bars and risers and the bushing are easily accessible. Use a screw driver to knock out the bottom bushing and from what I remember the top bushing comes out pretty easy.

I put (Springer specific) poly bushings in and it tightened things up a lot. I can't say I noticed any added vibration. A local indy recommended I tighten them a little tighter than the spec torque. That helped firm things up even more.

If you are going to have the front end apart, I'd highly recommend you do the bushing swap. Its worth the extra couple bucks.
+1 same thing for my 12" Road6 Custom apes.

well to answer my own question....there are solid bushings. They seem just fine as far as vibration. they do vibrate a bit, but whats a harley without a little vibration! there is no movement with my apes and there wont be...works for me!!!
