Ok i know there are some who have asked about if you can strip the powder coating from chrome, So i desided to try it out for my self. I call it the 13.00 chrome oil tank.
First buy some Aircraft paint stripper the 5 min stuff. It cost 12.99 then remove oil tank and applie stripper to small areas at a time. As you peel off the Pc the chrome will shine, wipe the new chrome with a damp rag as you go. Then when finished wipe it all down, then i used turtle wax chrome polish to really make it shine. here are some pictures.

Look in the lower left corner of the oil tank you will see where it started to peel.

Yes it was scratched a little also.

you can see where i was wiping with the damp cloth.

This is after i polished.

And then finished

Hope this helps.
Nice trick! Looks great.

as a new user i gotta say, this thread IS GREAT!!!..

but it REALLY needs to have some fat trimmed off it...it took me twice as long as it shoudl have to filter through the BS posts...

posts like that (including mine right now) really need to be deleted out of this thread...and the links in the first page need to be named better and fixed...

just a suggestion...

My low buck mod....trim the ears off the splash guard in rear that cover tires sides...just make it flat....looks SOOOO much cleaner....saw it on this forum but not in this thread.

email me for pics if you want.......... georgefiorejr AT gmail DOT com

We had a discussion thread about the PC coated tanks a couple of years ago and came to the conclusion that they PC'ed any tank that failed final chrome inspection.

Oh ok , I didn't see that. I heard a 2 stories about it myself from the dealers and such. 1 was that like you stated blems, And the second one was that they ran out of oil tanks on the main line so they had to use the chrome ones.
In my case the tank is mint all the way around so i'm just happy about that.
Thanks for the info.

My oil tank has a chip of pc missing at the bottom left side (very small) it happened when I was cleaning the bike and put a rag up under it to clean in there and when i pulled the rag out the chip came off, anyway I saw that it was chrome and was thinkin about strippin it but figured they might used damaged chrome tanks.I was afraid i would strip it and find a big glob of body putty or something attrocious and end up having to buy a new oil tank. After seeing your results I may go for it. Thanks for posting this is the exact post i needed to see.

I am thinking they only use chrome tanks on all softails and some get pc'd. That way they don't have to worry about the raw steel sitting around getting rusty and having to sand them down.

I am not sure if this is in here or not, sorry if it is. I sprayed my chrome turnsignals and headlight on my night train with this stuff http://www.plastidip.com/home_solutions/Plasti_Dip
The good thing about this stuff it is a rubber coating and i can always peel it off to go back to chrome if i want to. all it cost was $12 for the spray can. It took a whole day to remove spray a bunch of coats on the lights let dry and replace. I was real pleased with how close the color was to the black denim of the bike. here are some pics
