If you already have the SE air cleaner and want a better looking cover, this one cost 21.00 bucks from summit . Its a 6" 4bbl carb air cleaner. Comes with the element which cost only 4.00 to replace . You will have to make an adapter to go behind it to put the center stud in, cut mine from 1/8 aluminum .

But I'm sure that you guys can find otherplaceson your bikes to use it or a variation of it on.

Usesome SS treaded rod, I used SS carrage bolts and cut the threaded section to lengths needed. Jam acorn nuts on the ends with some JB Weld so they don't come apart. I would have used a stainless steel pin through the nut and rod but couldn't find any, and the JB seems to do the job just fine.

Stock Torx bolts in strut.

The parts you need.

And the finished product.

I think they look a lot better, you can remove them a lot easier than the soft Torx headed bolts andI don't have to worry about them rusting.

Cool idea man. I use threaded rod for a lot of stuff when I'm mounting things to replace the junk that HD claims is good. I hate the torx screws and bolts with a passion. When and where ever I can, I always replace them with stainless steel allen head bolts.

Posted this in another thread. Ut thought I'd add it to the DIY thread. It's definitely cheap. For my air cleaner, I've been using the round wall guard/patch things that you use to protect the wall from a door handle. Paint them black and it matches the wrinkle black engine well. A few bucks a piece or in a 3 pack. I'm having a few painted with different designs for different rides/whatever.

Thanks, just be careful where you use any of that all thread rod. It's not the strongest stuff around and may not hold up to some jobs.
I cut up grade 5 bolts to make sure they were strong enough to get the job done.

God how I love cheap alternatives to store bought stuff, great idea.
I especially like your idea that they are cheap enough to have several painted (decals maybe?) different ways for different reasons.

I just painted Plasti-Dip on my air cleaner cover today. I think it looks much better, and if it starts to peel I can just peel it right off with no adverse effects to the stock finish, then go hget a black on or get this one coated.
$7 for the can at home depot, and a few hours worth of paint/wait paint/wait.
Here is the before and after.
