Can someone shed some light regarding and estimate for a dealer to install the following for a 06 Night Train:
Vance & Hine - Big Radius : $584.95
HD Race Tuner: $413
Aif Filter - $125
And lastly to move my license plate to the left side of the bike
Total Cost with his discout: $2000.50
I don't know much about the mechanics in motorcyles, but I feel kind of violated! Can anyone share this kind of experience at that price or lower I hope?
Does this include the cost of the parts? Looks like about 6 hours to me. What is their shop rate. Could be anywhere from $75/hr to $150/hr. Parts $1123 without a left side plate mounting frame - you didn't mention if you'd need one. Plus $675 labor. $1798 plus tax. Sounds like they are in the ballpark to me.
Seems right to me too!If your cash strapped you should install all the parts yourself and then take it to dealer for sert mapping should cut costs quite abit! That is what I would Do but if you have no knowledge than get the manual and read it
Maybe I'm out of line here but there is no time involved in installing the Race Tuner and the installation of the pipes and aircleaner should be in the ballpark of about 4 hrsl.
You can get everything you want for at least 20% off from several different sources here on the forum. Some places are even giving 25% off. Installing them yourself can be a little tricky (especially the SERT) if you aren't very mechanical. I would think that $1700.00 total sound more like it to me.
I'm with Terry on this one... I did all my mod's for under $2000. Pipes and air cleaner are pretty simple mods IMO. I just don't know about relocating your plate, I would think that would be a 1.5 hour max to me. If you are feeling violated, try and do it yourself, maybe enlist the help of a friend to give you a hand. 2 heads are better than 1
I put my big radius pipes and new air filter on in my back yard with the help of a friend (she was service writer at dealer so she knew more of what she was doing, though) I think it took maybe 2 hrs.... Don' t know about the race tuner, they dyno'ed my bike and said the map was fine without anything else. I don't see how hard it could be to put on a license plate bracket. I know I sure wouldn't pay someone if I thought I could do it.
Are you all aware that it does not matter how long it actually takes the dealer to do any work, the charge is always the same? Ex: Dealer books say an oil change takes 1.5 hr. (or whatever) Say the mechanic does it in 45 minutes. They charge you for the 1.5 hours and the mechanic gets "efficiency time" which then counts points as a bonus on the mech. paycheck. I do not take my bike in for anything I could possibly do myself . The mechanic takes home a bigger check and all the bolts fall out of your scoot on the way home because they hurried to get this efficiency time. I don't know if all dealers operate this way but it was my understanding that it was a HD mandated procedure.
