I will be listing my front fender for sale soon. I will include the stock axle for those who want to swap from the Heritage/Classic style.

Default Taking the plunge

OK, I've decided to take the plunge and do the mods this winter.

I bought a brand new 2011 Crossbones in June after being totally discouraged not able to get my 2005 into the version I wanted to ride. I sold off my Softail and 1993 Anniversary Ultra (I'll revisit the Ultra again when I turn 60 something)

I've been following this thread since I purchased my Bones and often wondered what it would feel like driving a 2011 version of a WWII WLA. Was sold when I looked at some of the guys sig pic's here.

Thinking I'd hold on to all of the original parts like Skeez I've since listed and sold some and or traded them off. Sold was the bags and sissy bar with pad, but I still have the springer seat with hardware (pan etc) that I could replace if I bore of the new Mustang seat I bought to replace it.

Riding with a club I have the need to carry things all the time so I found a great set of Heritage bags that I would like to install as part of the mod, so turn indicators will be an issue never crossed with the other mods I've read about in HDforums. So I guess this will be a first.

Bid on too high (ya I know but you guys must have scooped all the good deals before me :-) was a 2010 Fat Boy Low rear fender with a slight ding just behind the last hole (where the turn indicator goes) so its off the shop for repairs before I do the mock up.

I'm kind of leaning to the Bullet Boys lay-down complete including turn indicators tail light at J&P (300 bucks) but I did have a yearning for the "Tomb Stone: the Col installed.. nice application but remember I have to carry all kinds of stuff when I run with the club, so ... Heritage Bags.

So here I am studying up on my next bridge to cross, the front fender. Again you guys bought up all the deals... ha ha ha. I'm stuck with the J&P one for almost 500.

Going over the list Skeez made up... I have to buy all that stuff too... LOL. Well like I said here in Detroit the winter is long so I have time, a really good mechanic and powder-coat guy!

Your input would be much appreciated!

Best of luck. Hit me up with any question on my post concerning the rear fender and keep in mind that I used Harley parts that made it the most direct bolt on application. As you may have seen, other members have gone several steps further to make it more custom such as different tail lights and such. I wanted to make sure I could get mine done and road worthy ASAP and then take my time on some of the other details.

If you are having trouble securing a tail light base with circuit board, you should just seek out a complete tail light from eBay. I went with just finding the base since at the time, they were readily available from a vendor on eBay for very cheap and just reused my stock Crossbones lens, plug and bulb. This brought the cost of the tail light set up to about $11. At the time, I could not find a complete tail light with base for that little money so I just wrote about what I went with.

I also wrote up a thread on swapping out the front fender but have not had the time to post it. I was getting ready to some time ago but as it turns out, my photos were too large and would not upload and then I just never got around to it. I may give it a shot this coming weekend if I can although I am celebrating my 38th birthday on Saturday so can't guarantee it. On the other hand I have the entire following week off so I will definitely get around to it then!

Default Trying to find a front fender

All NOS 2003 Heritage Springer Front Fenders are out of stock

The used section in E-Bay want to sell in a set, well you know I don't need the set, nor will it fit as I have the 200mm rear end, but anyway I got the Fat Boy Low 2010 rear fender already.

If any body hears of a 2003 Springer Front Fender Heritage Springer Style please hit me up!

And I continue my search for the rear fender lighting. Have lots of time so I'm taking it one step at a time. Since I have the Heritage bags and also want to find a set of rear bag guards too.

Would like to see the build Skeez, have been working off your list for some time, cool to read/see the build up.

NEED HELP!!! I have been following this thread for about 10 months and getting my parts together for my front fender swap on my 2010 bones, I am hopeing that SKEEZ and OLE COYOTE still come on here and can give me some advise, anyways I pulled my front wheel assm. last night and my problem is i cant seem to get the fender to sqeeze between the rocker bolts at the fork bottom, the bolts touch the paint on both sides as soon as i go to slide it up in there. It looks like once i get past the 4 bolts it will slide right in. Another thing i have noticed is the sphirical bearings in the fender axil housing sit out just a little where they would make contact with the rockers, is this normal or should the bearing be flush with the fender housing. Thanks, Doug in Maryland. cell #410-940-3155

How are you trying to get your front fender in between the forks? If you are just trying to raise it straight up holding the fender in its upright orientation then it won't work. You have to hold the fender on its right side and raise it up letting the left fork pass between the fender struts. Once you get it up high enough you start turning the fender right side up and as you do, the right fork legs should pass between the fender struts on that side. One thing I did to make things much easier for myself (but requires two people) is to not install the caliper/fender bracket on the left side as you normally would. I raised the fender into place following the procedure I described and had my nephew hold it up as high as it would go between the forks. As he held it up, I then installed the left side brake/fender mount and then lowered the fender down gently and installed the bolt on the left hand side.

The spherical bearings should protrude on the inboard side of the hub and it is the bearing and NOT the hub that sits flush against the outside of your rocker. This allows the fender to have movement on the bearing to keep things from binding since the entire assembly by design has to articulate for the suspension to work properly. If the hub itself sat flush against the rocker, it would have no play and the two metal parts would be grinding against each other.

Hope this helps?

Exactly, right out of the manual! We bought a 2005 Softail manual just for this because it included the Heritage Springer section.

"has to articulate for the suspension to work properly" very important!

You can check the movement before you install the tire and says so in the manual. If I remember it correctly (don't have the manual right here in front of me) there is two sets of bearings one for the tire and one set just for the fender. It fits perfectly on the race and moves flawlessly when articulated. It is really a fascinating set up and to think it was originally designed so many years ago!
