I was thinking the same thing, about having a clean title in the wrong hands. I would of been a lot better off starting with a repairable bike and working up, then I would not have boxes full of take off parts.

Just find it hard to believe that someone is riding with a late model without collision on a bike; more interesting is that someone just walks away and leaves it to the city.

I think you did good you may have 5k in an '03 when your done, better than the rest of us that have 25k or so in ours that are only worth 10-15k. Just searching e-bay and doing the work yourself you could come out of this with a ridable bike for cheap, thats a good deal

I got a lake plot at a tax auction for less than 100 dollars that is worth 12K. I do not see why it hard to believe.

You got a good deal. Now if your set on keeping it a stock Heritage disregard the rest...... Ok, search ebay, swap meets, this forums for sale section, friends, go make friends with the parts and service guys at the dealership you can find lots of parts out there cheap. I just found a Danny Gray Butt Crack Solo seat for my 09 Night train for 49.99 on ebay.

I purchased a 1987 FXLR (10th anniversary Lowrider) for 2,000. I now have about 3500 into it in parts that I have been collecting for the last year. I knew when I bought it it had been siting in a shed next to a barn for 3 years. The value of this was the HD Frame with a clear title. You have that you can build or repair or change anything you want to on that bike and it will always be titled as an original Harley Davidson. No inspections, no special insurance nada.

I would suggest you step back at this point since you own the bike free and clear and decide exactly what it is you want. If you want a Heritage rebuild it. If you want a modified softail now is the time to decide before you put any more money into it. PM me and I can provide some tips on parts for you if you decide to go the custom route. Good luck on your new project.

I don't under stand the bags part but it already has saddle bags. i'm not sure if i'm going to keep it on or not. they are just scuffed in the top corner. thats all.

The guy either wants to build a Harley or he does not have enough cash to buy new one. Maybe, he is smarter than the rest of us and not flushing 20K down the drain.
Whatever his reason is, be happy for the guy, he got his Harley.
its rocket science for me. and where i live i can't park it and work on it. I live in a townhouse complex with rules about fixing stuff. and i don't have parts and stuff for the bike. or the means to tune it right. better i pay a friend to work on it.

from what i could find in saddle bags: the paper work was that the accident happend down the road from the owner's house. accidents get towed by the state if they can not take the car.

His mainland insurance was expired just before the date of the accident and i don't think he got new insurance locally here. no one can tell me what happend to the guy if he's in a coma, died, (hope not) or if he just didn't have the money to claim the bike.

The guys at the auction say these types of things happen all the time. there are tons of cars / bikes that are for sale and get picked up real cheap. only thing its a gamble. sometimes you can just get a key cut and the car starts right up or sometimes half the motor is missing but you'll never know cause if the car is locked they don't open it for you to look at.
its basicly what you can go with on what you know.

so update took the bike to the mech's house and almost dropped it off the flat bed. got it down safely and he's going to first get the bike started. he feels that the bike is mostly cosmetic damage and that some of the damage may have been from the tow and picking the bike up.

so far i'm looking for hand grips, bars, oil tank, rear signal lights and front signal lights. Front fork tins too. floor boards and shift linkage. oh and rear fender brackets the chrome on it is messed up.

I couldn't agree more with some of the posts on here. I bet there are alot of us on here that would be embarrassed to say what we have into our hobbies, wether it be bikes, cars, boats etc. If you own it and like it, it's worth whatever your comfortable with. I purposely chose to own an older bike that I paid little for, put a little into it, but care alot for.

Good luck with it. And, by the way, you will need at least one saddle bag there, unless you want the lid on it right one flopping in the wind. I think that is what was meant by you needing a saddle bag.
