Default cruising speeds?

I read allot on here about guys doing upgrades to the bikes for more power but my question is this, what is a good cruising for a bike on an open 4 lane hwy? I always hear talk but quite frankly never see guys/gals cruising much faster than 70 MPH. Is there a reason for this? Can the bikes not handle cruising at 80 to 85? Curious, I am new to Harley and was wondering if cruising at higher speeds is hard on the motor? Also I know 70mph is the speed limit but i also don't come to a complete stop all the time at stop signs with my car if you know what i mean!

Get off the highway.....find a 2 lane.....cruise 45-60......enjoy your ride

If I have to be on the E-way I usually cruise at whatever is comfortable just as long as im not too high in the R's.

I cant speak for others and their preferred speed but I dont even shift into 6th until 70mph. I can cruise 80-85 all day with all kinds of throttle left.

The bike can handle the speed just fine, but over 65 for any length of time beats the crap out of my arms.
Besides the 45/55mph twisting two lane 'country' roads are always more interesting and fun.
I'm generally not into getting someplace as much as I am the trip itself.

Oh I like to cruise at about 80 but I drive a truck for a living and can't risk tickets. I keep it at 5 over most of the time.

In Southern California you spend a lot of time on the freeways doing 70mph +. If you're in the carpool lane, you will probably be cruizing at 75+. I don't have a tach on my bike, but at 80mph it seems like my 2004 Fatboy (88ci / 5 sp.) is taking a beating. I avoid running at that speed for any length of time. There are definitely times where I really wish I had a 6 sp..
