i just picked up a split tank from a 1998 softail. I am trying to install on a 1990 softail. are they compatible. Is there any thing written up on a how -to on tank removal and install?
trying this job tomm. so I need some help. I tried the search, but only 2000 and up models have pictures and things to help. I am looking at 1990 and wondering if anyone has done the job on here?

Have someplace to put the tank down after you get it off
Remove the main fuse
Drain the tank
Get a towel
Remove the console hold down nut
Lift the console up and slide the towel under it
Disconnect everything in the console
If there is a vent hose under the console disconnect it
Cut several 2" pieces of hose the same size as your fuel line. Push a snug fitting bolt into them.
If tank has finished draining remove the fuel lines. Now push the 2" pieces of hose onto the fittings. There's gonna be gas left in the tank and it keeps crap out of the fittings.
Remove the bolts
Lift the tank up slightly and see if there are any rubber bushings under the tank bolts. If there is make sure they go back on during reassembly.
thank you very much. if i disconnected the battery(went to buy a new one) is that the same thing as having the main fuse disconnected. or do i still have to disconnect the main fuse?

Naw. Disconnect the battery is better than the fuse.
thank you very much. got the battery sorted. first time I had to pour the acid in and seal/charge a battery. wish I could have found one local that was pre sealed
