Default Newbie with Fatboy exhaust question

Hey Guys,

So I hit 1000 on my bike, had the service and started to discuss exhausts. I like the VH BSS... my dealer said I can put them on with a mod to the air filter for 150 and a new MAP download for 150 bucks. Most threads I have read say to put in a Power Commander, is there a difference? What am I missing between the two? Thanks for the help.

When I got my Fatboy it had the same setup you are talking about. You can get the dealer download, it will work fine, but not optimal. The bike ran fine, but it would still run hot. Once I got a better fuel management system, the bike ran awesome, cooler, more power.
I would not waste the money on a dealer download. A Power Commander is an option, but there are other systems out there, too.

Don't waste your money on the download, it will run much better with a power commander, TTS or Thundermax, etc. You can also run the pipes without a tuner and air filter, but it will run much cooler and smoother once you add both, not to mention you will gain some grunt. Hit me up for discounted pricing on any and all of the above.

For my money, I'd do it all at once, but that is just me.

I agree with the doc! for just a couple hundred more than a HD download you can get a power commander. you'll be much happier.

Let me expand on my answer. I bought my bike used and it had the dealer download on it when I got it. The pipes were blued from heat and the bike ran like crap with a lot of popping on decel. I added a PCIII and a new set of pipes (never got blued) and it was a different machine. A few years later I got it Dynoed and it ran even better and cooler. the problem with the dealer download is that it has to conform to EPA standards which means that it does very little to change the way the bike runs. It still runs extremely lean with the download and quite hot which explains the blueing of the pipes. All it really does is advance the timing 4 degrees.

is it possible to dial in a power commander without dyno time?
rates here in ny start at $100 hr( with 4 hr minimum) to $600 at hd dealer for a "dyno tune"

i get different advice from different shops.
one guy says use power commander and run it on his dyno.
another says just plug in v&h fuel pak and call v&h if you need to tweek it.
and another tells me to throw out the factory ecm and get a thundermax.

my head is spinning!

motor is totally stock, but i plan on adding big radius 2 into 2 (maybe longshots) and SE air kit.
i'll eventually change out the cams.
i know the fuelpak is the easiest and least expensive route. but i dont know if its gonna be the best way to do it.

and i really dont want to pay $400 everytime i want to mod something.

You can load a map off the PC site no problem. It will run good. All I was saying is it will run even better with a Dyno. I did not Dyno my bike until the Power Commander had been on for 3 years.

Re: V&H BSS......... I had these on my '07 fatty and had the HD super tuner with map after 1K the pipes to me got to be (loud ) ears would ring. I got the D&D Fatcat now, but miss a little noise (lol ) and I have the T-max tuner.

Hey- why not put a little cam in that ride while you are at it? Just a thought.
