Hi all. First, Thanks for the welcome to the softail world from my first post the other day.
Now, question. On the stock exhaust I see what looks like a balance tube linking the header pipes. Does anyone know exactly what this does; for sound tuning, torque, etc.?
I ask because I wonder if the stock header pipes are maybe well designed, creating a 2 into 1 effect, something like that.
So, would for example RUSH slip-ons with the stock header pipes work well vs. the cost of a full exhaust system? Not trying to be cheap, as maybe Harley has done something good here.

the crossover tube is for scavenging it helps make power not as well as a 2-1 pipe but better than none at all.on my last bike i went with v&h short shots sounded good performed ok..this time i went with SE slip ons and took the baffles out which are removable and drilled a few more holes to give the same flow out as in..they sound great perform way better and as for comparing them to the short shots they do better in the power dept than the v&h short shots..
So, can I asume from the responses that the stock header pipes with the balance tube connector or whatever really does work well. And, as I don't want to go crazy with Mods then a set of good slip-ons will work very well?
For a 96 with Stage 1 mods (exhaust, air breather and tune) the stock head pipes with slip on mufflers works very well and makes good torque. Rush and Cycle Shack make some very reasonable priced performance mufflers that sound very good.
