I test drove a 2007 Fatboy today and I noticed a geardrive noise coming from the primary drive area. Is this normal? I don't have any comparable but my friend who also test drove the bike noticed it. He has a 1998 Softail Custom and he said his doesn't make that noise. Is it the newer transmission? It sounds just like the noise on the custom bikes with the open primary but not as loud. With the bike parked and started, you can twist the throttle slightly and hear it wind up and down with the RPM's. Also at idle you can hear it. It also sounds like a gear drive on a car that has changed the timing chain to a geardrive.
I was told it goes away after break in when I bought mine like that. Mine is an '07 and still sounds like that. Hate the sound, but it runs like a scalded dog w/out issues. Try others until you're happy. Don't let them sell you on ANYTHING. Stand up and speak your mind. Sellsmen are like sharks they just care about commission.
newbie here. recently purchased a pre-owned 2009 soft tail fat boy. the bike had 6,303 mi. on the clock. i changed all the oils and filter, used HD oils.
i put in 32oz of oil in the primary and tranny, and i can hear a clunking, gear vibration, grinding sorta noise from under the primary cover.
what do y'all think i should check? add more oil?
Big difference between primary chain whine and cam gear drive whine.Being it's an 07 they have had their share of compensator problems.Let it go and it will take the crank out. Pass on the bike there will be more.

Thanks.
I think it may be the counterbalancer chain. All softails have this sound. I had an 08 Electraglide, unbalanced motor, and didn't have this sound.
