I have an 05 softail standard and i installed a baron tach. I added the tach wire to the ecm plug in the #3 slot out of the ecm. I had everything all hooked up and started the bike. Everything worked great. Then i went through and mounted everything in and tied up all the wires. I restarted the bike an now the tach does not read rpm and i have the p1654 code. That is a current tachometer high 4.6 im self diagnostics code. I am not sure what that means. Can anyone help?
On my 04 with Harley's tac I wired it to the speedometer plug wire 3 which does not have a pin in the harness. Did not have a pigtails and Harley could not provide just the pigtail that comes with the tac (got my tac used on ebay and the instructions from the harley.com site) I took a pin from a 32 pin computer cable which is is the same size. The ecm says 3 is tac output but the instruction manuals I have seen say the tac output from the speedometer. Not sure if there is a difference.

You wired it right, it sounds like you pinched a wire when you tightened every thing down take it loose and see if it works then locate your bad wire. There is a difference in the connection points. On the newer bikes you don't connect to the speedo tach output, you get if from the ecm connector.
So i went through and rechecked all the wiring. I could not find any problems in the wiring or the ecm plug. The tach still is not reading rpm and i am still getting the p1654 code. Even better i called 2 dealerships today and both of them told me their was no such code in their manual. I am lost. It just doesnt make sense.
Don't know if this should be a new thread, but I'm installing the Baron BA-7573-01 tach on my '01 Scout. Electronics are all stock Thunder Heart with the Electronic Harness Controller.
The unit lights up and goes thru the power-up cycle when I turn on the ign, but there is no action when the engine is started. The needle doesn't even quiver.
Do any of the Softails use the Thunder Heart ign or EHC systems?
Sorry if I'm side-tracking the thread, but there aren't many posts re: tach installation for this system.

I used the pin off the speedo when I hooked my tach up. It's a Harley Tach though. Either the Speedo or the ECM connection gives you the same data signal.
Anyway, disconnect the tach, clear the code and then hook it back up again and see if it works or not and if the code appears again. Maybe your Baron Tach took a dump...
