Default gas leaking?

Hi folks, I have a 1991 Heritage with a S&S super E on it. I installed a new petcock in the tank and am using a inline filter. Yesterday, I opened the garage to take the bike out and the smell of gasoline almost knocked me over. The petcock is turned off but it appears gas ran out the overflow tube from the carb. The bike has not been run in a week. Has anyone had problems with defective petcocks? I can't see any other way for gas to get from the tank unless the petcock is really not shutting off the flow. Any help is appreciated.

You probably have two things going on there.

1) Even with the petcock on, gas should not run out the carb overflow or anywhere else. The float needle is either stuck, bad or has dirt in it, either way I'd change it since it will have to come apart anyways..

2) Couple years ago I bought a new petcock and the rubber seal lasted about a week, the new gas we have ate it up and turned it to jelly. I got a new seal made from something called Viton and it's been ok since. BTW, the reserve does not work on this petcock either, It's a Drag Spl. brand and I would not recomend it.

Any chance you got the markings wrong on the new petcock? Not all of them are marked particularly well, and you may have switched over to reserve instead of off.

Thanks guy's, I have had problems with the needle and seat getting crap in it but I thought the inline filter would fix that. I'll check the petcock too.

+1 here.

I had just picked up the "chrome" petcock from J&P because I couldn't see spending $100 for a "high flow" valve that doesn't even need a pressure rating just because it has the name Pingle stamped on it. That petcock lasted me about four days till the rubber seal went. J&P shipped me a Milwaukee Twins for the difference in price which is a much better built petcock.

Mine did that EXACT thing before. It was the float needle. The ethanol in the gas causes the rubber tips to harden and not close off all the way. $11 bux and it went away.

Well, guys I have found that my petcock is not closing if the lever is pushed all the way to the closed position. The lever moves just passed close and I can watch the fuel run into my glass filter. Thanks for the tip on the needle Tas Todd. What did you buy and where did you get it please?

Okay Tas Todd, thanks I thought you might have found a better needle than the stock one with the rubber tip. I'll contact S&S and see what they recommend.
