It isn't really too half-*ssed. You set the one shock as a starting point and use the RAP shock to fine tune for 2-up, single, loaded down, etc. More or less preload on one and the other is for tuning. But that is probably why they went HD only. Killed the basic spring when loaded.
Still sounds kinda sketchy to me.

I might be a buyer for your non-RAP's if you end up trading.

This is from the service manual on adjusting suspension:

Be sure both shock absorbers are adjusted to same preload
position. Improper adjustment can adversely affect
stability and handling, which could result in death or
serious injury. (00036a),

I'm sure the moco is being dramatic - but I'd really like to see a heads up comparison of the stock, RAP, non-RAP, and SS in terms of on road performance.

The RAP shocks obviously work differently to. The stock shocks, so I would say that the statement from the service manual probably doesn't apply if you have RAP version.

With this RAP suspension, do you still have to crawl around to adjust it?

From what I can tell the ride height is adjusted the old fashion way and the preload is adjust remotely hence the "RAP". (Remote Adjustable Preload)

So I would think these are not for someone who wants to routinely "slam" their bike.

There seems to be a lot of interest in this shock setup and I'm included in that interest, but I can't seem to find a lot of independent reviews on it.

I know how much a fan of SS you are and there's little doubt they give a nice ride, but I'm just having a hard time with the cost and at half the price of SS the 422 RAPs seem very appealing.

Also, I've run into a few riders who have replaced their air suspension systems with non-air systems because of problems they've had while riding. I will note though that none of those that I know who have replaced their air systems had the Shotgun Shock setup.

Anyway, with the gel pad seats I have my Heritage rides acceptable for now so I'm taking a wait and see attitude for some other options.

I looked at the RAPs when they first came out and even talked to Progressive about them. Only reason I didn't go with them is because they only come in the HD version, and since I usually ride solo, the Progressive rep said the RAPs would probably be too stiff for me (175 lbs.) due to the HD spring

They are now easily available with either the standard spring or the HD springs.

I'm only 155lbs, so I'm going for the standard version if I get these shocks.
