Need help picking a Cam
The Woods 555's, Woods directional lifters & SE Adjustable push rods will be in tomorrow & hopefully installed by the weekend on my 09 Heritage. It has pipes, air & PCV now. Motor is a stock 96. Now getting out & testing will be up to the weather gods. More to follow.......
SO I go to the Dealer Sat. and ask some general questions on cams. I tell him I'm thinking of the 204, 255. He gives me a look and says he has not put any 204's in a 96 and 255 is more for the 103 the only one he's recommending for the 96 is the 254E. I haven't looked at the 254E yet. I want the idle lope of the 204 and good low end, I usually don't shift past 4000. Thoughts and opionions needed !!!

The 255 would be a better choice than the 254 and the Andrews 48 would be better than all of the above.
JMHO but the engine will be a turd with the 254 compared to the SE204 under 4000 rpms. Tell the dealer tech you appreciate his input but you want the SE204. The SE204 has some overlap; the 254 has almost none; the 204 intake closes at 34* and the 254 closes at 43*; no contest IMHO. Upgrade the inner cam bearings while you are at it.

CAM picking can be confusing.
When my son put the 204's in his 07Duece and 09 night train He did it at our HD dealer master tuner's suggestion. He (tuner) though the SE204's along with STG1, SERTwas the best overall cam choice when no other motor mods were done and still be covered by the new Warrenty..
I didn't mention that both of the sons bikes they also installed a 4* advance gear...
Also from 07 till 10 that our dealer did a bunch of bikes (probably over several hundred) with the 204's. Its was their most installed cam.
Cams, like pipes are not easy to pick, even HD dealer can't agree on what cam they think is better ...
There are Five HD dealers, 60 miles of home.
I talked to all Five Master wrench's, asked, what cam they though would be best for my (Heritage), ridden two up 90%, wanting Low to Mid TQ.
Answers I got.
Two said the SE-211's, One said the SE 203's, The two others said the SE204's...
I now know that the 211's are soft in the lower rpm's, they need a little bump in Comp to shine.
The 203's would be good for what I wanted.
The 204's With the 4* advance will work great to also in heavy bikes. They are better (IMO) for lighter bikes straight up,
There are a lot of other cams that will work great and U'd love.
I ended up with the Andrews 26h's and after 3yrs I still am pleased.
Reasons.. Easy on top end. Cooled motor another 20*'s. Better fuel mileage. from 41 avg to 45avg. And last,,,,the fun factor,, 15-20% better tq over stock. Also later if/when I do the 103's, even head work,, they will still be good cams to grow with...
The 26's aren't the baddest boys as some other cams will make 2-7 #'s of TQ and HP more, But I still have stock headers with slip ons.
Below is a link of the sound of the Sons 09 NT train with the 204's Wish he's let it idle down a little more,, He was just really proud of the BSL's...
The 203's are probably close to the 26's for what I wanted in the SE line. And the 204's With the 4* advance will work great to also.

Still one of Ur WANTS was a loppy Cam and 204's will do that.

OBTW--- since 2010 out dealers-master tuner is now reccomemding the S&S 551's for Heavier bikes for the best low-mid TQ on the 96er's.

Hello All,
So I have a 2010 96cube fatty that is stock other than airkit, pipes and tuner, and now I want to throw a cam in her.
I ride solo ALL the time and am looking for a lumpy idle and good low to mid pull. Not interested in high end speed.
There are so many choices it is making my head spin, so I am looking for opinions from those more educated that me.
Cheers

Mongrel.... I am spending way too much time with this one. But i like talking cams
I do feel the pain Ur going through though...
I did it 3yrs ago..
OK,,,, bottom line.... What I've learned in 5yrs of studing cams.
There are so many cams that will do U fine.. and there not a major difference in cams that the intake close is in the 30's.
No 1. All woods cams are hard to beat (if not the best for #'s),, They cost more, but the ramp speed of the lobes some say are harder on the V-train and some claim they are NOISY, now that's debatable.
But they usually always produce higher #'s..... So,,,, if Ur a performance type dude then this is what U want.
No2, U say U want Low - Mid TQ, which is where most cams fall into..IF U Keep the Intake closure under 37*,, as I've said before....
I've stated how I ride, but this is really what I do, wife and I ride mostly 30-60, seldom (Less than 5%) on Super Slab, mostly back county roads...
Thats why I chose the 26h's.....
Now U ride solo 99% on a Lo...
Heres a list of some of the cams that IMO that would serve U well.....
Andrews
21H's,,, 26H's , 37's and 48's really for a stocker "10" 96er I'd go 21's or 26's, the 37s will shine in the mid high a little longer.
Crane
300 , think I read there making them again???
Dave Mackey
Tc510.
HeadQuarters
TC500Hc..
SE
204
203
211's if U bump the comprssion up to 10 or so and with head work (great)
S&S
551's Stump pullers and they U can get built in CR's,, big plus..
Woods
TW6
or TW6-6..need to check..
Then there's the wood new 555
Not trying to freak U up just most any of these will U do a good job...

So far all the research I've done seems to agree with YOU. I just had'nt heard of the 254E and thought maybe it was a new and improved design. Is there a site that lists how old these grinds are? I'm not wanting an EPA compliant if its going to hurt performance and how do you tell if it is EPA compliant?
