Default Happy Break-Down Anniversary!

Well I believe it was one year ago today that all my break-down problems started happening last year. Most of you in here know that story.

Well, happy anniversary! Today I took a ride and my back brakes felt funny. Mushy. I noticed I was pressing the pedal quite a way down.

I told my husband (who was riding behind me) that I thought I was going to have to bleed the back brakes once again and they felt mushy.

We got to my mom's house to bring them dinner I made for them. As we were leaving, my bike wouldn't move. Didn't know what was happening at first, thought I was on a hump in the driveway so Hubby pushed the bike backwards. That totally locked the bike up. Won't budge.

Took the right saddlebag off to look at the wheel. The caliper is all screwed up. One side is all crooked and jammed.

What could have happened?!

Well at least it was in my mom's driveway and not while I was riding and not during my big Vermont ride last weekend, thank you Lord

Quit ridding that bike on Memorial week-end...

Bolts backing out could cause that.

Bolts backed out and as you continued riding it, they got hot...really hot.

Here's some pictures. You can see the back pad is messed up, all jammed. The stuff all over the pics is pollen.

The last pic was taken from the other side and it's hard to see, but I can see a metal piece looking unclipped and a yellow piece underneath that poking out.

So if my bolts backed out... then it's likely that the guy who installed these new calipers a few weeks back didn't user the proper loctite?

I am going to want restitution. I think my rotor is scored also.

If I'm looking at it correctly, it appears that you may have lost one of the bolts securing the pads, and the inner pad one fell down and rotated toward the hub.

If you pull out the other bolt securing the pads, ( top most bolt, first pic,) you should be able to "walk" the pads out and re-install. ( Assuming you have the bottom-most bolt that came loose in the first place.)

It's not as bad as I initially thought, but the inside of your rotor appears scored.

You need to start doing regular look arounds on your bike. Usually these things happen to riders that don't spend enough time doing routine inspections. It could have been something as simple as a loose bolt bolt, which would have been found during your inspections.

I do a TCLOC inspection every time I ride. I didn't know I was supposed to take the saddlebags off and check the caliper bolts too, especially on calipers that were installed a few weeks ago.

Sorry to see that. That's some bad luck.

Nope both bolts are in there, the problem is when they installed the new pads
they didnt get the bottom stud (or whatever you call it) in the slots that hold the bottom brake pad in place.

+1 on that, I had it happen too ... was trying to get the pads on there fast ... luckily I noticed in time while I still had the bike on the jack.

You were very lucky it happened in the driveway!

Least they can do is fix it up properly! And then I would start looking for another mechanic if I were you.
