Default Melted poss and neg battery terminals

I have an 03 Deuce CVO and i installed a new battery. I rode it for a day and went to start it the next day battery was dead. Found out both terminals were melted. Any ideas what could have caused this and could this cause any damage to the bike. Thanks

Default Heavy Heavy Load on the battery

The only thing that can cause a battery terminal to melt is a dead short across the terminals of the battery. This causes an extreme load on the battery and high amperage will melt the terminals. Is there a metal piece under the seat that could cause a short across the terminal or did the terminals come in contact with the side of the battery container. If so you will see arcing and that will be your answer. Either problem will kill your battery.
Good Luck.

I agree with the above, a dead short. Check the bottom of the seat for arcing. This could cause the voltage regulator and or the alternator to fry. After you install the new battery, you will need to check out the charging system to see if any damage has been done.

Cut a piece of rubber and lay it over the top of the battery.

Thank you everyone for helping me with my problem. It was the seat. I installed a new battery but it was not a HD battery. I had top mounts along with side mounts. I shorted across the seat. Thank again for the help because i would have fried another battery. You guys are great.

Thank you for all your help. It was the seat that shorted the battery out.

Dosen't have to be a HD batter.. just have to make sure its the same Phy size...

and its better to hook up the new one the same way as the org one.. Don't use the top mounts I mean if the other one wasn't that way.

Shorting the battery should not hurt anything else. The charging system should be fine along with everything else electrical on the bike.
